The school hosted its third annual "Cutting for a Cause" assembly Feb. 16, encouraging students and adults to cut off their ponytails in front of the school for charity. The donated locks will benefit Children With Hair Loss, an organization that serves youth who have lost their hair for medical reasons. For the first time this year, boys could participate by shav- ing their heads to raise aware- ness for the cause. In previous years, the school has donated to a Pantene pro- gram that gives real-hair wigs to women with cancer. With the focus on helping children, orga- nizer Jessica Brown said, stu- dents were better able to identify with this year's cause. "One of the boys that shaved his head today was in honor of a friend who is 12 and is battling cancer," Brown said. "So it really hits home when the students realize they are helping someone their own age." In addition to cancer patients, the organization helps youth who have lost their hair because of alopecia, burns and other dis- eases, in hopes of promoting self-esteem and confidence. The school collected 254 inches of hair in total, which will con- tribute to the organization's annual goal of distributing 300 wigs. Students chop off locks for a cause Charles Auer/Freeman Staff St. Dominic Catholic School 6th-grade student Madelynn Schmidt reacts as her grand- mother Diane Schmidt cuts her hair for a donation on Feb. 16. More than 30 students donated their hair or had their heads shaved to help children with hair loss.
