He walked out of Waukesha South High School unbeaten, but he was pushed at the end. Brookfield East senior Josh Dempsey ran his record to 36-0 by winning a WIAA Division 1 regional title at 160 pounds. But Waukesha West senior Trentyn Shaw made Dempsey earn it, as Dempsey held on for a 4-2 victory in their title match. "I've just been on a roll. I really don't know what to say," Dempsey said about being undefeated this season. "I don't really think about it. I just go out for this one day. I go out there and wrestle as hard as I can and hopefully things don't change and I still win." Dempsey's road to title match was much easier. After a bye in the first round, he scored a 29-second pin in a semifinal match. Shaw was a scoring machine in his two matches. He won his first match 19-4 and won 12-6 in a semifinal match. Nothing came easy in the final. After no scoring in the first period, Shaw opened the second with a one-point escape. Dempsey earned a takedown late in the period, but Shaw was able to get out to tie it 2-2. Dempsey chose the bottom position for the start of the third period and earned a one-point escape to take a 3-2 lead. Both wrestlers did a lot of circling and defensive moves for the rest of the match, and Shaw was penalized one point for stalling. Afterward, Shaw stormed off the mat mad at himself for los- ing. Dempsey was shocked Shaw was so upset, because the two are friends and were sparring partners in the off- season at the Askren Wrestling Academy. "I really worked hard for that match," Shaw said. "The ref called me for some stalling calls that I didn't agree with. The ref was calling it the best he could. I was more disap- pointed in myself more than anything because I didn't take as good of shots that I knew I could have taken." "He's got a good double leg and so do I, and we are both good at defense so I knew it was going to be a good match," Dempsey said. "We are friends and we talk all the time, and we are trying to be respectful when we are wrestling. I was surprised he stormed off. Hopefully we will be good after state, but right now we have to be like, 'You're not my friend.'" While Dempsey did not win the sectional a week later, he did get another opportunity against Shaw — and it brought Dempsey a trip to the state tournament. Dempsey lost his first match of the season in the sectional title match to Waterford fresh- man Jared Krattiger — who remained undefeated — by a 5- 2 decision. Dempsey was forced into a second-place wrestleback with Shaw. After a tight regional match, Dempsey put Shaw on his back and scored a pin in 3:06 for second place and the trip to state. BOYS BASKETBALL: Brookfield Central 52, Menomonee Falls 49 By Tony Mooren Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD — Junior Philip Shady was aggressive — and then nimble as all get-out. Senior Max Wojcik was sneaky, and senior Emil Radisevic was near perfect. It took all of that and more for the Brookfield Central High School boys basketball team to overcome a 12-point first-half deficit and end a five-game losing streak with a wild 52-49 victory over Menomonee Falls. The 49 points was the fewest allowed by Central's defense in pre- vious last 10 games. There were six ties and 10 lead changes — most of them in the final quarter — before two free throws by Central junior leading scorer Andrew Bruggink gained the final tie with 1 minute, 59 sec- onds remaining in the game. One minute later, Shady drove the lane for layup and a 47-45 lead, and in a blink of the eye Wojcik got sneaky for an inbounds steal and layup. "He (Wojcik) backpedalled on them and then snuck back up and timed it perfectly," Central coach Dan Wandrey said of the steal. Two free throws by junior Bryce McMurtry, the game's leading scor- er with 20 points, narrowed the score to 49-47. But Wojcik respond- ed with two free throws to set up a huge defensive play by Shady. The ball was tipped away by the defense, and Shady took off after it. "He's a really aggressive player who can shoot the ball and get it to the basket," Wandrey said of Shady. "He's a hustler, an energy guy who's given us that, but one of the most impressive things he did was his unbelievably athletic play flying out of bounds to save that ball." "I just saw the loose ball and went after it. It went through my legs but it worked. Luckily it ended up in (Wojcik's) hands," Shady said. "On the (go-ahead) basket, I was looking to attack the hoop the whole game, and coach was yelling to push the ball up. After I scored I turned around and there was Max laying the ball in again! "It's been an up-and-down year for me, but this was definitely one of my better games." Wojcik finished with a team-high 14 points, Radisevic added 13 points and Shady 11 points. Bruggink a game-high nine rebounds — six of them in the second half. And the thing is, Radisevic was 5 for 5 from the field and Shady was 4 for 5 in the second half when Cen- tral committed just two turnovers while coming back from a 26-18 halftime deficit with 11-for-17 shooting (65 percent). "That's awesome, because we had seven or eight at halftime," Wandrey said of the two turnovers. "That's basketball 101. You've got to take care of the basketball and get shots." Radisevic was playing in this third game since missing six weeks following knee surgery. "I'm a little sore, but it's fun," he said. "I just want to play. Coach told me to slow down, clean things up, to be more in rhythm and to go inside-out." "You can see Emil's a little out of synch, but he's fighting back and there's no doubt you can't expect that kind of shooting from him and Philip every game." The teams' first meeting went to overtime before Central completed a comeback from a 14-point deficit to win 55-44. McMurtry was 7 for 11 from the field and senior Jake Stauffacher backed him up in scoring with 13 points and junior Ty Weber had seven points and seven rebounds. Falls' biggest lead was 22-10 in the second quarter, and the Indians still led 31-22 with 6:44 left in the third quarter when Shady had a layup, 3-pointer and an assist to Radisevic before two free throws by senior Kam Pfeifer and two more baskets by Radisevic gave Central a 13-2 run to end the quar- ter with a 35-33 lead.
