WAUKESHA — As we approach the middle of October, it's time to address with your family a potental hidden danger in your home — carbon monoxide. The Center for Dis- ease Control and Pre- vention says more than 500 people die each year in the U.S. from unintentional, non-fire related car- bon monoxide poison- ing. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas that is undetectable by the human senses. It is found in fumes pro- duced by furnaces, vehicles, portable generators, stoves, lanterns, gas ranges or burning charcoal or wood. From these sources, carbon monoxide can build up in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces. People and animals in these spaces can be poisoned and can die from breathing fumes. As such, now is the time to check the bat- teries on your carbon monoxide detector or purchase new one from a local retailer. Also, avoid using alternative sources of power for heating or cooking that can cause carbon monoxide to build up in a home or garage and can poison people or animals inside. The Centers for Disease Control offers these tips to prevent exposure to carbon monoxide: ■ Have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil or coal burning appli- ances serviced by a qualified technician every year ■ Install a battery-operated or battery backup CO detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. If the detector sounds, leave your home imme- diately and call 911. ■ Seek prompt medical attention if you suspect CO poisoning and are feeling dizzy, light-headed or nauseous. ■ Do not use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove or other gasoline or charcoal- burning device inside your home, basement, or garage or near a window. ■ Do not run a car or truck inside a garage attached to your house, even if you leave the door open. ■ Do not burn anything in a stove or fire- place that isn't vented. ■ Do not heat your house with a gas oven.
