Anundson is president of Elm Grove's OAR Group, a corporation whose acronym is a reduction of "Owner Assisted Remodeling." Anundson and his associates suggested a winter-planning checklist for homeowners. Besides inspecting the heating system, the checklist includes caulking windows and doors, checking chimneys, gutters and sump pumps, reversing ceiling fans, inspecting the roof, turning off outside faucets in conjunction with falling tempera- tures and acting to prevent ice dams. A roof might, as a general rule, last 25 to 30 years, but "someone should look at a roof at least once a year," Anundson said. He also said shoveling snow on a roof can lessen its life, if scraping is involved. "I like to let the sun (rather than the shovel) take the last inch or so of snow off," he explained. Anundson added that good attic insula- tion "is really what prevents ice damming" more than anything else; that homeowners might consider using binoculars to "look for any places where mortar might've come off" chimneys, as well as chimney cracks and water stains; and that a yearly sweep of a fireplace chimney is a good idea.
