"Through his acts of bravery, he made people feel special." Durkin, choked up by his recollections, ended his speech saying, "I love you, Jimmy. We all do." Family and friends of Foley's agonized throughout the past two years as his status was largely unknown. In 2012, he was kid- napped while reporting in Syria. Libyan soldiers had kidnapped Foley the year prior while he was reporting in the country. It was during that time period he penned his now famous "Phone Call from Home" article. It was published in the fall 2011 issue of Marquette Magazine and read aloud at Tuesday's vigil. In the 18 years since graduating from Marquette, Foley has spoken often of his alma mater. He addressed its influence in "Phone Call from Home" and spoke at the campus late in 2011 of being in captivity in Libya for 44 days. "Marquette University has always been a friend to me," Foley wrote in the article. "The kind who challenges you to do more and be better and ultimately shapes who you become." The article also provides a heart-tug- ging recount of a call Foley made to his mom 18 days into month-and-a-half in cap- tivity. "I replayed that call hundreds of times in my head — my mother's voice, the names of my friends, her knowledge of our situation, her absolute belief in the power of prayer," Foley wrote. "She told me my friends had gathered to do anything they could to help. I knew I wasn't alone." Lori Bergen, dean at Marquette's William and Mary Diedrich College of Communications, shared how Foley gave viewers and readers a unique perspective into the lives of people impacted by war. "He wanted to show both sides of wars," Bergen said. "He didn't just want to show the fireworks. Jim was a courageous journalist whose ethos was in Marquette." The program also included a candle- light ceremony and several readings of prayers. The Rev. Douglas Leonhardt, associate vice president of Marquette's office of mission and ministry, provided a closing prayer and spoke of the anguish people have been feeling since word of Foley's death first surfaced last week. "Nothing can make up for the absence of someone we love," Leonhardt said. "The more dear and rich the memories, the more difficult it is. There is a gap in our hearts." Leonhardt encouraged people who knew Foley to hold steadfast to their mem- ories of him, and he challenged everyone to live out some of the examples Foley set through his actions. "We are challenged to live in gratitude," Leonhardt said. "Let us go forward in peace." Peace, after all, was at the heart of many of Foley's efforts.
