By DAVE FIDLIN Special to The Post MILWAUKEE — "It didn't make sense. But faith did." Those were words written three years ago about war and captivity by journalist James Foley in a piece, "Phone Call Home," that has been widely circulated in recent days. People who knew Foley personally recounted his words, and shared reflec- tions, during a prayer vigil Tuesday that focused primarily on Foley's faith and acts of social justice. Hundreds of supporters and mourners filled the Church of the Gesu on the Marquette University campus and remem- bered Foley, a 1996 graduate of the Jesuit school. A video from the Islamic State sur- faced a week ago; it revealed a masked killer beheading Foley, 40. In addition to his well-publicized roles as a conflict journalist in Libya — and, more recently, Syria — Foley's efforts included work with Teach for America, a program focused on educating children in poverty. During Tuesday's hour-long program, several people within the Marquette com- munity shared how Foley, a New Hampshire native, directly impacted their lives. Tom Durkin met Foley when the two were freshman at Marquette. They instant- ly struck up a friendship that has endured in the nearly two decades since. "He touched so many people, and he was loved by so many people," Durkin said. DID YOU KNOW?
