August 22, 2014 • Milwaukee County Post • 3 By DAVE FIDLIN Special to The Post MILWAUKEE — With upward of a hun- dred residents in attendance, officials from the Milwaukee Department of Public Works and Milwaukee County Parks recently whisked through a series of slides that illustrate the possibilities for Copernicus Park. Themed playgrounds, a labyrinth garden and art and sculpture enhancements were among the list of possible amenities that could be added to the green space, which is under the auspices of the county parks department. Copernicus Park, located on Milwaukee's southeast side, is in the midst of an extensive review as concerns of flood- ing, stormwater runoff and other issues have cropped up in recent years. City and county officials are working in tandem to determine ways of alleviate flooding concerns while adding new accents to the 20.4-acre Copernicus Park site. It is bound to the north by West Grange Avenue, to the south by West Klein Avenue., to the east by South 22nd Street and to the west by South 20th St. "This is a hidden gem in the south side," said County Supervisor Jason Haas, who represents the area surrounding Copernicus Park. "I would love to see it blossom into something we can all be very proud of." At the moment, Copernicus Park is home to basketball courts and a tot lot that includes playground equipment. Haas was joined by Milwaukee Alderman Terry Witkowski, who repre- sents the area at the city level, for a public workshop meeting last week at Cooper Park School. The intersection of South 20th Street and West Klein Avenue has been a particular spot of concern with flooding-related issues. To mitigate the concerns, city and coun- ty officials are in the process of exploring the feasibility of constructing a detention basin within the grounds of the green space. The governing bodies have enlisted the services of Chicago-based Terra Engineering to design a detention basin, which is expected to be about 6 feet deep. "This would address an area that tends to pond up and have standing water," said Dustin Erickson, senior project engineer with Terra. But placing a hole in the midst of a park that is frequented by children drew safety concerns from several attendees, who feared a drowning or some other unintend- ed consequence could occur. On several occasions, a presentation delivered by Terra representatives was interrupted as residents queried the experts on the rationale behind the suggestion. It is possible fencing or some other form of barricade could be installed to keep chil- dren away from the detention basin. Erickson said the proposed basin would be designed to handle a 100-year flood, meaning it would address high-rainfall events. City and county officials will continue to gather feedback from residents during the exploratory phase of Copernicus Park's future. Further updates are anticipated in the months ahead.
