As kids, we admired Andrea Mead Lawrence, 1948 medalist in slalom and giant slalom. We ran, arms wide, through our Chicago home pretending to be Stein Eriksen, the ski Olympian who ran Aspen Highlands' ski school. My mother kvelled over Jean-Claude Killy, and my sister took French in case she ever met JCK. I got ski fever so badly that I became the first woman ski patrol on Aspen Mountain. I took out loans to compete on the women's pro tour, and I even won a few town downhills. My kids became monster skiers right away, thanks to the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club. Growing up, they rubbed elbows with Olympians. Alberto Tomba turned to my son on the chair and asked where to eat, and Tommy Moe signed his hand-painted American flag at an Aspen World Cup. This fall I scooped up an invite to Follow me on Twitter at the US Olympic Committee Team @alexpubap and on USA Media Summit in Park City. Facebook at facebook.com/ aspenpeak.magazine. My hero, Bode Miller, spoke on his skiing evolution, training regimen, and legacy as a member of the US Ski Team. Seventeen-year-old Torin Yater-Wallace gave credit to three years of Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club scholarships. He said AVSC recognized his potential, and now he's headed to the Olympics in this, the first year of a new Olympic sport: ski half-pipe. Twelve Aspen athletes are competing to secure spots on the 2014 US Winter Olympic team in various disciplines— an impressive list that showcases Aspen as a hub for world-class athletes. The Valley is abuzz with construction as the commercial core receives a grand face-lift. Two new restaurants, Ricard Brasserie & Liquor Bar and Bia Hoi Southeast Asian Street Food, open at Snowmass Base Village. In Aspen, three local ski shops are opening in new locales: Performance Ski, Stefan Kaelin, and Miller Sports (a new outpost by Bill Miller of Hamilton's Sports). This issue celebrates all this: skiing, winter fashion, and Olympians. I predict it will be a bountiful snow year. And as we enter 2014, I'm thrilled to celebrate Aspen Peak magazine's 10-year anniversary, which will culminate with an incredibly special occasion. Stay tuned.
