FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Shania Twain celebrated her opening night (and December Vegas magazine cover) with publisher Joe Vann, assistant editor Emma Trotter (who wrote Shania's cover story), and me. ABOVE: Joe Vann and I posing with our 2012 Vegas Gives honorees. Many thanks from all of us ladies to Kwiat, for dressing us in diamonds, plus Topshop for my dress and the ridiculously talented George Moreno of Barneys New York, who did my makeup. I've slowly over the years seen almost every Strip show—often three, four, or five times—but one show always alluded me. When my brainy brother and mom saw Penn & Teller, they raved about it, mocking me for never having seen it. I told them that there was no rush; I prefer seeing "special" shows: premieres or a show's 1,000th performance, or as a birthday present for someone who had always wanted to see a certain show. Then, sure enough, a friend of mine was visiting from Colombia, and he had two requests: really good sushi, and to see his idols, Penn & Teller. I got us tickets that afternoon. Since then I've gotten to know Penn and his wife, Emily, through our annual charity events Vegas Dozen and Vegas Gives, and even enjoyed some sit-down time with Teller. I so admire Penn and Teller's dedication both to their art form and to the city that has embraced them so. It is fascinating how they analyze magic and live performance, how they seem to know their audiences better than they know themselves. And don't forget how they create for the sake of creating, digging into the process of developing new acts with zero urgency, giving each idea plenty of time to sit before picking it up again. In my fast-paced world of deadlines and racing Follow me on Twitter at to events, their creative process made me @abbytegnelia and on nostalgic for my days as a freelance writer, vegasmagazine.com. when I had the luxury of letting stories "sit" before more rounds of tweaking and editing, always looking for something more clever to say after giving myself time to think. What an issue! I also got to watch Rock of Ages, the latest Broadway show to land in Vegas, and interview Robert De Niro, something that my other brother was particularly green with envy over. While I was waiting for him to arrive in a super-luxe, not-yet-opened villa at Caesars Palace, I stood on the patio overlooking the pool, peering up at the roof. How could you help but think of The Hangover? And wouldn't you know it, in walked Bradley Cooper, who ran up to shake my hand, clearly thinking I was someone on the Caesars team. Never a dull moment!
