The 56-year-old journalist informed and amused Northwest Indiana for nearly three decades with solid reporting and incisive observations about the region���s pageantry ��� from its most exalted government officials down to the axle grease of its motorcycle clubs. ���Northwest Indiana has lost its voice of conscience,��� Times Executive Editor William Nangle said. ���Mark always told it as it was, favoring no one, but holding up those who did good.��� A friend who was with Kiesling on Dec. 13 said he suffered a seizure. He was rushed to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, where he was pronounced dead. Lake Superior Juvenile Court system in 1990 uncovered evidence that then-Judge Darlene Wanda Mears routinely forced personal staff to do her personal errands. His stories triggered a state police investigation, and voters removed her from the bench during a 1992 referendum. A decade later, his investigation about delayed justice caused by then-Criminal Court Judge Joan Kouros��� disorganized paperwork eventually led to her departure from the bench, too. Kiesling took up the columnist���s pen in the summer of 2004, moving from his objective role to a position of subjectivity, and his colorful narration made the area���s more pedestrian events sing. Kiesling also volunteered as a baseball and softball coach in youth leagues. He is survived by sons David and Nicholas, a daughter, Abigail, and a sister, Nancy. Supervisor started career in 1974 Jack L. ���Captain Jack��� Ulery Jr., 56, of Madison, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012. He was born July 15, 1956, in Peru, Ind., the son of Jack L. Sr. and Joyce Schmidt Ulery. He was raised in Peru and was a 1974 graduate of Peru High School. He began his career in the newspaper business with the Peru Daily Tribune from 1974 to 1998. He also worked for M & M Towing as a fork lift driver for several years. The family moved to Madison in 1998, and he worked for The Madison Courier as production supervisor until his sudden death. He was spiritual and enjoyed nature and music. He enjoyed playing music and was known as the Percussion Man. He also enjoyed golf and played as often as possible with his family and friends. He was always busy, either at work, play, on the Sunrise Golf Course, the Peru Circus Band or with Andra Bladen and the Two Buck Chucks. He enjoyed watching the Purdue Boilermakers and the Miami Dolphins. He was awaiting the birth of his second granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Melissa Jo Bacon Ulery, whom he married Jan. 26, 1980; one daughter, Brooke Nice of Peru; three sons, Kristopher Ulery of Madison, and Scott Ulery and Eric Ulery, both of Hanover; two sisters, Kim Ahlfeld of Kendallville and Anita Ulery of Sumter, S.C.; one brother, Jeff Ulery of Mexico, Ind.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandmother, Ethel Schmidt. He was regularly honored over the years for feature writing, community service and investigative reporting. Kiesling graduated from Munster High School in 1974 and Indiana University in 1978. He worked for the Lansing-based Sun Journal newspaper and the Daily Calumet in South Chicago before being hired by The Times in June 1985 as a staff writer. He was a prolific writer of the events of the local courts, police stations and the halls of civil government. Kiesling remembered everything, said Bill Bero, who was a co-worker of Kiesling for more than 30 years, said. ���He used to keep a journal of crazy quotes from Chicago politicians who obliterated the English language,��� Bero said. ���He wasn���t afraid to tackle tough stories.��� His investigation of the Photo by John J.
