"I view this as an action- forcing piece of legislation, not an end-all be-all," said Johnson. "It starts a much- needed conversation. It's not right to leave this in the hands of a few people." Right to Try did have bipartisan support. Johnson says 40 states passed the legislation with close to 100 percent of legis- latures in each of those states voting yes. It also passed unanimously in the Senate. Johnson explained that critics of the legislation were afraid Right to Try could give terminally ill patients false hope. "I think that's (Right to Try) something that both parties can support. This should be bipartisan. If somebody is in the terminal stage of an illness and wants to try something out, they should be able to," said Scott Trindel, past chair- man of the Waukesha County Democratic Party and active member. Because it's still a brand- new law, Johnson says there are still a lot of unknowns that need to be figured out. Right to Try could have long-reaching effects on how clinical trials are con- ducted, and even encourage innovation among drug manufacturers. Johnson says the FDA itself dis- suades innovation, but Right to Try could turn that around. "For me, this is so sim- ple. It's about freedom, and why shouldn't we return that?" said Johnson. Johnson also shared his thoughts on other current events during his visit to Conley Media. On whether he is opti- mistic about the Korean Summit: "I'm not an optimist with anything. I'm a realist. I'd much rather have this administration or any administration talking. I do believe that President Trump is not bluffing. I do not believe he will let North Korea have nuclear capabil- ity and IC(B)M capability." On Roseanne Barr's tweet and show cancella- tion: "They used to have, and I think they still do have, moral turpitude clauses. You're a commercial enter- prise, same way with NFL players. It's within the right of that commercial enter- prise. Listen, this is enter- tainment. They're in this to make money. "And the extent you do something to violate that moral turpitude clause, or just create a public outroar where we're going to get creamed financially, that's our right as an organiza- tion." continued from Page 2
