FOR THE Wedding, Anniversary or Engagement Announcement Permits terminally ill patients to try treatments not fully approved by FDA By ASHLEY HAYNES Conley News Service WAUKESHA — You only have to talk to one of the families whose names are includ- ed in the Right to Try Act to see that pass- ing the act into law was the right decision, says Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R- Oshkosh. During an interview with Conley Media May 31 — the day after President Donald Trump signed the Trickett Wendler, Frank Mongiello, Jordan McLinn, and Matthew Bellina Right to Try Act of 2017 into law — Johnson explained its true intent. "The intent was not to give the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) more power. To be blunt, the intent was really to diminish FDA power over our lives and increase the control that individuals have — increase freedom," Johnson said. The Right to Try Act now allows terminally ill patients access to medical treatments that are still being investigated, but have passed some of the first tests administered by the FDA. The patients must have exhausted all other options and be cleared by their physicians to do so. Right to Try also provides liability protection to drug manufacturers who pro- vide their products to people who are ill. The manufacturers can charge for the drug, but only at its actual cost. Johnson says that even though Right to Try is now law, he still wants to make sure that the FDA does not try to undermine the bill's intent. He sent a letter to the organi- zation on May 31 expressing concern after Johnson: 'Right to Try' law will 'increase freedom' Volume 24, issue number 23 The Milwaukee Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414-744-6370 News display and advertising FAX: 414-375-7070 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: 414-744-6370 Barry Richards: Advertising Representative — ext. 13 brichards@conleynet.com Julia LeGath: Advertising Representative — ext. 17 jlegath@conleynet.com Jim Baumgart Advertising Sales Director — 262-513-2621 jbaumgart@conleynet.com For editorial questions: Dan Muckelbauer Editor 262-513-2626 dmuck@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee Post 3397 S.
