A new thriller takes a look at what might happen if people had the ability to live out their dreams in virtual reality. Sarah Shahi ("Fairly Legal") stars as former hostage negotia- tor and human behavior expert Mara Kint, who's recruited to help when an immersive virtual reality program works a little too well in "Reverie," premier- ing Wednesday, May 30, on NBC. The high-concept drama was created by Mickey Fisher of "Extant" fame, and is produced by Steven Spielberg's ("Jaws," 1975) Amblin Entertainment. Kint was once a cop who left the force to become a college professor after the unimagina- ble loss of her sister and niece. Dennis Haysbert ("24") portrays Kint's old boss, one-time police chief Charlie Ventana, who asks her to help users who've be- come trapped in an innovative game developed by the compa- ny where he works. "Reverie is a place where the impossible becomes possible," Ventana explains in the show's trailer. "You're put inside a wak- ing dream of your own design. The problem is, some of our us- ers have decided that life in Rev- erie is better than the one out here." Developed by Alexis Barrett (Jessica Lu, "Awkward"), the completely customizable virtual reality program known as Rev- erie allows users to access an unprecedented VR experience through a simple neurotransmit- ter implanted in their bodies. Dream specialist Paul Hammond (Sendhil Ramamurthy, "He- roes") works alongside Barrett to design factory presets and training protocols. Hammond trains Kint to use the program in the hopes she can draw the us- ers back out into the real world. When people who have tried Reverie don't want to return to their real lives, their bodies be- come comatose. This unexpect- ed consequence concerns De- partment of Defense official Monica Shaw (Kathryn Morris, "Cold Case"), who's interested in the Reverie program. As Kint struggles to guide each rogue user back to the light of their real lives, she be- gins to realize that saving others may help her heal the wounds Feature this week
