So-called "convenient comas" and lead character amnesia are sources of great hostility from fans and crit- ics alike, and rightfully so. These sorts of events makes it nearly im- possible to suspend one's disbelief and stay invested. However, this has not been the case with "Em- pire." Its loyal and dedicated audi- ence has stayed with the musical drama throughout its wild run, and there have been no accusations of "jumping the shark." It's easy to see why, since the fourth season has been as strong as ever. While season 4 has been quite captivating and downright enter- taining, there has been a lot of be- hind-the-scenes action that didn't bode well for the Wednesday night staple. After a time-slot shift, the series took an extended hiatus to retool the second half of the sea- son while losing its showrunner, Ilene Chaiken. Nevertheless, it wasn't all doom and gloom. The critically lauded series' ratings stayed strong, successfully crossed over with fellow Fox hit "Star," and raked in serious awards buzz. After the insanity of last sea- son's finale, season 4 promised a complete reboot of the series: "Empire 2.0." Maybe not a reboot in the traditional sense, like CBS's "MacGyver" or CW's "Dynasty," but a complete character transfor- mation on the part of the main protagonist (or antagonist, de- pending on the day). Lucious has become a different person while dealing with the aftermath of the Vegas explosion. The extensive damage to his mind and body has led to a great change in his person- ality and nature, and, in turn, his family and friends. The current season of the phe- nomenon created by Lee Daniels ("The Butler," 2013) and Danny Strong ("Buffy the Vampire Slay- er") is shaping up to be the wild- est, most intense season yet, while returning to its roots. After years of memorable guest stars and cameos by celebrity heavy- weights such as Cuba Gooding, Jr. ("The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story"), Snoop Dogg ("Training Day," 2001) and Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls," 2006), the musical drama made a point to move away from the big names and focus on the Lyons, their struggles and keeping their dynasty strong. Terrence Howard, Jussie Smollett, Taraji P. Henson, Bryshere Y. Gray and Trai Byers star in "Empire"
