The French, the Romans, the Byzantines and the Ottomans have all seen their do- minions crumble beneath them. It doesn't matter who you are, be- cause, as the proverb goes, "all good things must come to an end." On Wednesday, May 23, on Fox, we will find out if the Lyons survive the fourth season of "Empire." Heading into the season finale, there are many looming questions. Will Lucious (Terrence Howard, "Hustle & Flow," 2005) make good on his threat to sick the feds on Ed- die (Forest Whitaker, "The Last King of Scotland, 2006") for his insider trading after the latter's failed takeover attempt? Will the Dubois finally take down the Lyons? Will Cookie (Taraji P. Henson "Hidden Figures," 2016) break? After all, one can only hold it together for so long. Will Anika (or "Boo Boo Kit- ty" to all the haters out there) (Grace Byers, "Bent," 2018) finally get her revenge? Before we get a resolution to those lingering questions, we have to examine how we got here. Drug- dealer-turned-hip-hop-mogul Lu- cious Lyon is paying for his former sins. After being diagnosed with ALS and facing mortality, he is forced to choose an heir from among his three sons: Empire CFO Andre (Trai Byers, "Selma," 2014), R&B singer-songwriter Jamal (Jussie Smollett, "Alien: Covenant," 2017) and rapper Hakeem (Bry- shere Y. Gray, "The New Edition Story"). Surviving the mean streets and ruthlessly climbing the corpo- rate ladder hardened the father of three, who is a firm believer in the survival of the fittest. In one of the poorer decisions in television his- tory, Lucious turned his three equally qualified sons against one another. Since that extremely question- able choice in judgment, there has been much drama, backstabbing and bloodshed (accompanied by a superb soundtrack, of course). The third season of "Empire" literally ended on an explosive note, with Lucious surviving his son Andre's assassination attempt in the form of a bomb blast. After spending three months in a coma, Lucious fi- nally woke up, but with no memory of his near death or his family and friends. The failed hit on the found- er and CEO of Empire Entertain- ment naturally led to a chain reac- tion of events that have progressed from bad to worse in the roller- coaster of a fourth season. Historically, a game-changing event like a main character falling Feature this week
