Miller, after fi ghting a fi erce battle, whispers his last words to Private James Ryan, "James….earn this. Earn it." As we approach the celebration of Memorial Day, we honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifi ce to secure our freedoms; we truly have a tremendous debt to repay. If you have ever visited a veteran's cemetery, you cannot leave without knowing that freedom does not come cheaply. How can we earn the sacrifi ce given to us by over one million servicemen and women? To start with, we can stand up for what makes this country the greatest on earth. As an upcoming election nears, it is amazing to me how few get involved in the process of electing our leaders. We must vote for those who will honor our veterans and stand up for the fl ag in which they served under. We should also be standing up for the freedoms we still have. The freedom to worship God and raise our families with God honoring values must be protected. If we allow a few people to dictate our be- liefs, then shame on us. The American spirit of freedom and independence still survives, but under the guise of tolerance we have allowed ourselves to be intimidat- ed. It is time for us to shun political cor- rectness and to let our voice be heard. Let us honor those who have paid the price of freedom by preserving the principles of the America in which they died. We have been given great freedoms at a high price, now we must earn it!
