FOR THE Wedding, Anniversary or Engagement Announcement speeds accelerate to catch up to the motorist. "The determination is made on an individ- ual basis," Brunson said, pointing out officers interact with supervisors while pursuits are occurring. "We still have the idea that safety is of the utmost." Other findings from the report broke out the numbers of pursuits by district. The largest number of pursuits — 106 — occurred in District 5, which serves portions of the cen- tral city and is one of the most impoverished areas. By contrast, District 6, serving the city's far South Side, notched the lowest number of pursuits — eight — this past year. Other data gleaned from the report revealed the age of pursuit suspects contin- ued to remain low, compared to a decade ago. In the earliest period of the 15-year analy- sis, the median age of suspects were between 38 and 40 years of age. More recently, the median age has hovered around young adults, typically those age 18 or 19. FPC members had inquired about the types of offenses linked to the vehicle pur- suits. In most instances, Brunson said the flee- ing motorists were initially pulled over because of one of three offenses: reckless driving, robbery and possessing a stolen vehi- cle. He indicated he would break out the fig- ures by type of offense and bring them back to commissioners at a later date. Other recent FPC matters ■ The FPC at its April 19 meeting affirmed its prior appointment of Alfonso Morales as the city's police chief for the duration of Flynn's term, which expires in 2020. Two Milwaukee aldermen — Robert Bauman and Terry Witkowski — allege the FPC violated open meeting laws when Morales was first appointed April 5. At the recent meeting, commissioners denied any wrongdoing but again named Morales to the top spot within the MPD. Witkowski has issued several news releas- es taking aim at the FPC's steps, which included a one-day meeting notice of the appointment early this month. The alderman said he did not believe the maneuver offered adequate time for public input. "Chief Morales has a difficult task before him," Witkowski said in a news release issued Monday, after the affirmation occurred. "It's unfortunate that the board chose to begin his tenure in such an irregular way." ■ Late last week, after the most recent FPC meeting, Executive Director MaryNell Regan announced she was resigning from her post within the civilian organization. Monday was Regan's last official day on the job. Alderman Bob Donovan issued a news release Monday, praising Regan for her con- tributions. He also implored Mayor Tom Barrett, who has oversight over the commis- sion's leadership, to carefully consider Regan's successor. "The citizens don't need another crony of the mayor in that position," Donovan said in the statement.
