Supervisors Steve Taylor and Peggy West lost their re-election bids for Districts 9 and 12, respec- tively. They joined fellow Supervisor David Sartori, who was ousted from his District 8 seat in the February primary election. But three incumbents facing opposition did win re-election to their positions on the 18-person body, including County Board Chairman Theo Lipscomb of District 1, Tony Staskunas of District 17 and Deanna Alexander of District 18. Lipscomb, who frequently has locked horns with County Executive Chris Abele over policy issues, narrowly defeated political newcomer Casey Shorts. Lipscomb earned 52 percent of the 10,866 votes cast in the district. Lipscomb's victory drew scrutiny this election season because of Leadership MKE, an organization receiving funds from Abele, and its advocacy behind Shorts. According to its website, Leadership MKE organizers said they were supporting candidates this spring "who are looking to move Milwaukee County towards a more sustainable future." Lipscomb took jabs at Leadership MKE and Abele for what he suggested amounted to muddying the waters as the coun- ty faces difficult decisions in the road ahead.
