The decision, according to elected officials, is designed to curtail suicides, drug use and address mental health concerns. The city's aldermen voted, 12-2, in favor of the conversion therapy ban after a robust discussion at a Common Council meeting Tuesday. Alderman Cavalier Johnson, who sponsored the ordinance, said the ban does not impact the faith-based community, meaning LGBTQ youth can still meet with pastors to discuss sexual and gen- der identity and other related issues. "I just wanted to clear the air on that," Johnson said. "This is not an attack on ( f a i t h - b a s e d leaders). This is an ordi- nance about protecting young people — a vul- nerable population." Johnson and many of his sup- porters on the council pointed to statistics out of nonprofit organi- zation the Trevor Project as the basis for the ban. The Trevor Project, founded in 1998, focuses on suicide prevention efforts for LGBTQ youth. Research gleaned out of the Trevor Project the past two decades asserts LGBTQ youth exposed to conversion therapy are 8.4 times more likely to have attempted suicide, 5.9 times more likely to have high levels of depression and 3.4 times more likely to have used illegal drugs, compared to their peers. Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, an ordained minister, said she Conversion therapy ban aimed at protecting 'a vulnerable population' See COUNCIL on Page 15 Milwaukee aldermen approve ordinance following emotionally charged discussion Local news at your fingertips Visit www.gmtoday.com Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MilwaukeePost Johnson A $369 Value!
