She found a 9 mm handgun, which her brother, age 10, shot her with in the neck after removing the clip, according to a criminal com- plaint. He and four other, younger siblings waited Saturday in the house in the area of North 38th Street and West Hampton Avenue for their parents to return from shopping, the complaint said. The parents, who are not being named by the Post to protect the identity of the children, were charged with child neglect resulting in death. The 32-year-old man was charged as a repeat offender. He and the 29-year- old woman were charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, as she was named in the complaint for obtain- ing the firearm. The father carried his blood-soaked daughter into St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee at about 12:14 p.m. after being driven by the girl's mother, a police officer said in the complaint. Despite lifesaving efforts, the girl was pronounced dead at 12:52 p.m. The parents told conflicting stories about their where- abouts at the time of the shooting, according to the complaint. She admitted receiving the handgun at about 1:30 a.m. that day from a person who said he no longer needed the gun she had purchased, the com- plaint said. The girl's father handed the mother the gun and told her to "put it up." The 10-year-old boy said in the complaint before his par- ents went shopping he was told to watch his five younger siblings who are as young as 1 year old. He saw his 9-year- old sister with a gun in his parents' bedroom, thought he unloaded it and shot her while she twirled around the room, according to the com- plaint. The children had no way of contacting their par- ents, the complaint said. Police found a gun lock that had not been used, the com- plaint said. Medical Examiner Brian Peterson, M.D., said in the complaint that timely med- ical intervention could have possibly saved the girl. If convicted, each parent faces 25 years in prison on the child neglect charge and 10 years on the felon in pos- session of a firearm count. He faces at least five years more on each count as a felon and 3.5 years for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
