Alderman Michael Murphy on Monday discussed the new sys- tem, which rolled out in January, at the month- l y Intergover n- m e n t a l Cooperation Council of M i l w a u k e e County meet- ing, which met at the West Milwau- kee Commu- nity Center. The 19 may- ors and village presidents serve on the ICC. Since its launch, Murphy told ICC members the grading system has been successful, though he pointed out the Wisconsin Restaurant Association has been lobbying state lawmakers to abol- ish it. "We didn't do this cavalierly," Murphy said of the system, which was developed over a three-year period in partnership with the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee's Master of Business Administration program. Students in UWM's MBA program developed an algorithm around the system. Although the grading system remains in place, Murphy said the city could face challenging head- winds in the future as the WRA lobbies against the practice. Attempts to reach WRA represen- tatives for comment by press dead- line were not successful. "Right now, it's going to be a battle," Murphy said. Murphy pointed out several large cities, including New York City, have used a similar system in the past. Locally, Murphy said the system was created, in part, because, "We just don't have enough inspectors in (the) Milwaukee (Health Department)."
