Bio: The son of Mexican im-
migrants and the first in his fa-
mily to receive a post-secondary
education, Mario Treto Jr. is
passionate about using his legal
knowledge to support the Lati-
no and LGBTQ communities. In
2017, he was named one of the
40 Best Lawyers Under 40 in the
country by the National LGBT
Bar Association.
As lead attorney for various
City of Evanston entities, Treto's
legal practice includes land use/
zoning, commercial transactions,
legislative drafting and municipal
prosecution. Treto has drafted
more than 500 ordinances and
resolutions, including the Evans-
ton Sanctuary City Ordinance,
Human Rights Ordinance and
Gender Neutral Restroom Or-
dinance — the first of its kind in
Illinois. He has collaborated with
municipalities to file a number of
notable amicus briefs, including
opposing President Trump's tra-
vel ban and LGBTQ discrimina-
tion and supporting sanctuary
cities and the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency.
Treto is the first Latino board
chairman of Howard Brown
Health, the largest LGBTQ orga-
nization in the Midwest. He is
also involved with organizations
promoting Latinos in law, inclu-
ding serving as the Vice-Presi-
dent of the Indiana University
Latino Alumni Advisory Board,
Region IX Deputy President for
the Hispanic National Bar Asso-
ciation and a founding member
of the Indiana University Young
Alumni Steering Committee.
Treto donates his legal services
to the Saltbox Theatre Collective,
Wills for Heroes and Chicago's
Legal Assistance Foundation. He
holds a bachelor's degree in bio-
logy and psychology from Wash-
ington University in St. Louis
and a law degree from the India-
na University Maurer School of
Law.
