B-2 Wednesday, November 21, 2012 The Press-Dispatch Charger wrestlers win three meets in tourney gers wrestling team ven- tured north for the first ac- tion of the season and came home with a 3-2 record in the Lafayette Jefferson Invi- tational this past weekend. The competition came The Pike Central Char- By Mike Johansen from the Lafayette area and Indianapolis and was a chance for the Chargers to experience some of the tough wrestling that takes place up north. They suffered a couple of injuries that forced some changes. Taven Randolph, 152 pounder, was lost in the second match because of a possible concussion and Ca- leb Hawkins, 106, went out in the second match due to a strained neck. The 3-2 record was a lot comes up to try to help. The action was in the preseason scrimmage last Wednesday. Shaine Eck puts tight defense on a South Knox player as Kegan Aldridge Chargers find plenty to work on before opener is clear from the preseason scrimmage that the Pike Central High School Char- gers boys basketball team had with South Knox, there is still a lot of work to be done before the season opener on Nov. 30. Coach John Mokris said If there is one thing that By Mike Johansen the scrimmage was very beneficial in that the coach- es learned a lot about both the varsity and JV teams and that there will be a lot of work ahead for the opener Nov. 30 at Class 1A No. 1 ranked Barr-Reeve. They play the Vikings JV at 6 p.m. and the varsity game is set for 7:30. The Chargers first home game will be Sat- urday, Dec. 1, against the Princeton Tigers with a 6:30 JV and 8 p.m. varsity game. Coach Mokris said there seven minutes. The defense was on pace, and South Knox only slipped in front 12-4 and ended the period with a 14-6 edge. The JV teams gave the varsity teams a break and played the third quarter. Pike Central had the edge in that period with strong defense and better shooting. The Spartans JV scored only one and went one of 13 for the JV quarter. Pike Central was four of 11 from the field and missed two free throw tries. PC had an 8-2 edge for the JV quarter. The Chargers varsity is a lot of work to be done by both teams to get ready for the season, and they have a week and a half more to do that work. However, he is not sure the true identity of the team will be fully known until January. The Chargers varsity played the Spartans varsity the first two quarters and did not fare too well. The Spartans scored the first basket, a three-pointer, and Dustin Meny answered a short time later for a 2-3 score. The Spartans scored the next nine points before the Chargers made another shot in the 12-minute quar- ter. Tyler Garland was able to put a short shot in at the five-minute mark. The final five minutes were a lot more even as the Chargers found the range. Kegan Aldridge had two baskets in a row and PC closed the gap to 8-15 at the end. not get off to a good start in the second quarter, with South Knox nailing the first two baskets for a 5-0 lead. Garrett Elliott took a short shot and Aldridge added a basket a short time later for a 4-7 count. But that was the last time PC would score for The Chargers again did came out much stronger in the third period. After trail- ing 0-2, Garland slipped in a shot for a tie game. South Knox countered with a two, but Shaine Eck made his jumper felt for a 4-4 tie. A three by the Spartans re- sulted in a 4-7 count. Trevor Claridge made a shot, fol- lowed by a three by Elliott for a 9-7 Pike Central lead. After the Spartans tied the game with two free throws, Claridge made the final shot of the period to give PC a 11-9 edge. In the final varsity quar- ters we struggled. When the varsity had their halftime, as I call it, we talked about it and came out with a little different offense and a little different approach. We won the third quarter and we were up in the last quarter until we made some substi- tutions because I had seen enough of the starters." "Things got better as the night went on. We had some good play from a few of the kids and were able to see where some of the kids are as far as skills and develop- ment," said the coach. "We had some good play from everybody and everyone picked up the pace from that first half," added Mokris. "The kids are learning. They are learning from me as much as I am learning from them. I looked at what they have to offer and we will make a few changes and work hard on improving our basic skills to get ready for the season." The coach said having an- ter and final quarter of the game the Spartans went ahead 2-0, but the Chargers countered right away with a two from Garland off a pass from Claridge, and Elliott hit a three. Chris Downey took a pass from Garland in for two for a 7-2 Chargers lead with 6:50 remaining. That is when the JV Chargers took over for the remainder of the game. South Knox had a 11-2 margin over the final stretch for a 13-9 edge in the quarter. "We just need to get better other two-and-a-half weeks after the scrimmage is going to be good for them, as they will have a tough opening weekend of games. "We have to work on our defense and we have to work on passing and break down our offense a little bit more. We have plenty to work on," said Mokris. "We'll get bet- ter, it is just going to take some time." the years to come. He had a few forfeits on the day, but when he wrestled he looked very physical and quick. Anytime you leave your first high school tournament un- defeated it shows you have potential to be a good wres- tler. Other wrestlers that performed well were Jacob Day and Mason Roberson. Both went 4-1 and showed some things that are really exciting. They capitalized on mistakes that their oppo- nents made and overcame the mistakes that they made themselves." "We wrestle at the always- better than the 0-5 record from the opening weekend a year ago. Pike Central downed Rossville 54-21; beat Attica 48-27; lost to Jef- ferson 30-43; beat Indianapo- lis Manual 63-3; and lost to North White 21-60. "It felt good to get out tough Turkey Classic in Mount Vernon next (Friday and Saturday). It was made even harder with the addi- tion of a couple of schools. We gain back a few wres- tlers that we did not have last week, and hopefully we can improve more and come out of this tournament with some bright spots as well," added Coach Hewig. Pike Central did not have and wrestle opponents this Saturday, and it was nice to see improvement from last year's team. We came back with some wrestlers unde- feated and some with a 4-1 record, which is a positive coming from a six-team tour- nament. Last year we came back from the same tourna- ment 0-5 and with very weak individual records, but we came out strong this year, wrestled well early, and real- ly made some nice improve- ments," said Pike Central Head Coach Billy Hewig. "Dalton Miller wrestled well and showed a lot of improvement in his foot speed and strength, which was good to see since those were his problem areas last year. He pinned every kid he wrestled within the first two periods and showed strong wrestling from both his feet and the mat. Austin Bolin really showed what a tal- ented wrestler he can be. He bumped up a weight class for this tournament and still wrestled with dominance over his opponents. He lis- tened really well, kept his head clear in moments that are tough in matches and showed his talent to scram- ble. Cody Whitehead had a wonderful day. He improved his game from his feet from last year and probably wres- tled the best matches I have ever seen him wrestle. He really worked hard over the off season and it showed in his performance over the weekend," said the coach. "Gage Fiscus had a good day and showed that he can be a strong competitor for Sports Week at a lot of different things. I was mostly observing last night to see what we really need to work on. It was good to play someone else and get a better view of our needs," said new Pike Central Head Coach John Mokris. "I knew it was going to be sloppy ear- ly on. But if you watched the scrimmage carefully, we got better as the night went on.
