Shop Local! look like the Rockwellian images of Thanksgiving past, but celebrating together is an important part of the holiday season, and many families will be settling in to enjoy some quality time in front of the TV. It seems each generation has a favorite TV family. From the Ricardos in "I Love Lucy," to the bell bottom-clad Bradys in "The Brady Bunch" and the Barones in "Everybody Loves Raymond," TV clans have changed over the years. But the formula for mak- ing a successful TV family can elude even the most experi- enced writers. Luckily, the folks of ABC's "Modern Family" have it all fig- ured out, and the sitcom is enjoying its fourth season in a prime Wednesday night times- lot. In keeping with the times, the series takes a look at the lives of three distinct family units — all related, but very dif- ferent. as Jay Pritchett, head of an extended family that includes his vivacious second wife Gloria Ed O'Neill anchors the cast Water Softener Salt Special SALT SALE EVERY SAT. 8am-Noon 40# Mini cube ....... $4.49 80# Mini Cube ...... $8.19 40# Solar Salt ....... $4.49 80# Solar Salt ....... $6.69 40# Rustbuster ..... $5.29 80# Rustbuster ...... $9.39 50# Block.............. $4.59 50# RBuster Block . $5.79 Try Our Drive Up Window! Jay's uptight daughter Claire (Julie Bowen) is a stay-at-home mom to her three kids, Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter) and Luke (Nolan Gould), alongside her kooky husband, Phil (Ty Burrell). The third family unit is composed of Jay's gay son, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), his partner, Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), and their adopted daughter, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons). Filmed in a mockumentary style, the sitcom lives up to the hype, mocking all kinds of mod- ern-day stereotypes. Over the seasons, the show has poked fun at the lives of gay men, older gentlemen with unbeliev- ably hot wives, and even teen angst. Such episodes have not been without criticism, but many of the legendary TV fami- lies pushed the prime-time envelope. Successful TV family sitcoms show heart and reflect the times, and that's true of "Modern Family." Despite the show's sometimes oddball and even slapstick humor, it handles modern-day foibles faced by many of its viewers. Cameron and Mitchell struggled to adopt a baby, Phil isn't quite sure how to parent his kids, and Claire seems perpetually stressed out about something. This season, the blended fam- ily faces even more challenges as Gloria and Jay prepare to welcome a baby of their own. Manny, who's always had his Oliver Softs 750 ml. $5.99 Yellowtail $5.99 Barefoot Pink Moscato $5.49 3 Convenient locations for all your party needs! mom to himself, will have to adjust, whether he likes it or not. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Phil and Claire try to wrap their heads around eldest daughter Haley heading off to college. After a failed attempt to adopt another baby, Mitchell and Cameron settle into life with Lily. They will surely weather these changes with the same sense of humor that's brought them this far. And they've cer- tainly come far since that very first episode on Sept. 23, 2009. After coming up with an idea for a mockumentary-style show about contemporary family life, creators Christopher Lloyd (no, not the actor) and Steven Levitan pitched the idea to ABC, CBS and NBC. With two mocku- mentary sitcoms already ("The Office" and "Parks and Recreation"), NBC passed on the show, as did CBS. However, the alpha network quickly snatched it up. In truth, "Modern Family" is also inspired by the French TV series "Fais pas ci, fais pas ca," to which ABC holds the rights. The show's debut drew more than 12 million viewers and quickly became an Emmy favorite. ABC had picked up the series for a full season order within two weeks of the pre- miere, and "Modern Family" was deemed an Emmy favorite from the get-go. Viewers loved the writing and the mockumen- tary style, but, undoubtedly, "Modern Family's" greatest strength has always been its ensemble cast. Sofia Vergara stars as Gloria in "Modern Family" The series has won the Emmy for outstanding comedy series all three years it's been in con- tention for the award, as well as this year's Golden Globe for best television series — musical or comedy. There is truly no weak link in the series; even the younger players have earned awards. Along with the SAG for ensem- ble cast, all three young actors (Rodriguez, Gould and Winter) have been twice nominated for the Young Artist Award, winning in 2010. awards and critical acclaim, "Modern Family" is not immune to drama. This summer five cast members took 20th Century Fox to court to have their salaries increased. The potential crisis was averted when the parties reached an agreement.
