February 2, 2018 • Milwaukee County Post • 3 Alderman Bob Donovan, whose dis- trict in- cludes the Wa l g r e e n s store, said that sources told him Mayor Tom B a r r e t t asked to see the video and ordered Brown not to be charged. "If this is true, it is direct political interference in police work and is incredibly dis- turbing!" Donovan said in a news release. Patrick Curley, the mayor's chief of staff, wrote, "Alderman Donovan's claims are absolutely false. Mayor Barrett was informed of the arrest on Friday morning and was later briefed by the police department. He has never seen the video. He absolutely did not put any pressure on the police in this case, or any case in the time he has been mayor. Alderman Donovan deserves a technical foul." Police Chief Edward Flynn said in a statement, "Although the Mayor was briefed in gen- eral terms about this incident, I never had a conversation with him or took direction from him about this case. Although I appreciate Alderman Donovan's knee jerk loyalty to the union's position on everything, I would remind him that get- ting his information from the Milwaukee Police Association does not equate with actually knowing the facts." Donovan said he stands by his statement. The law should be equally enforced, he also said. While the Police Depart- ment would not say if Brown struggled with police, Donovan said that Brown became combative during the incident. Officers were not injured, Gauerke said. Donovan said he has sought an increased police presence around the store and area. "That Walgreens location has been the victim of numer- ous armed robberies over the course of many, many years," Donovan said in his release. He added the vehicle was sus- picious because it was parked "for a swift exit." Brown, who was booked at the jail at about 5:30 a.m. Jan. 29 and released at about 7:30 a.m., was not jailed with the general population, Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office Director of Support Services Fran McLaughlin said. "Any high-profile, self-bail- ing subject is kept separate from the general population. To avoid disruption in the booking area, their booking is expedited," she said. Brown posted $300 bail, McLaughlin said.
