Sports Page 7 January 26, 2018 Bradyn Klein Staff Writer Jake Benner Staff Writer Andy Garcia Staff Writer Plans to get an average of one goal per match for current season With the ski and snowboard season just starting, and fresh snow on the mountain, the Red Bluff Alpine team is more prepared than ever to have a great season. Sophomore snow boarder Jakob Fregoso, who has been hitting the slopes since he was 10, is determined to try his hardest, yet still have fun enjoying the sport. With Mt. Shasta Ski Resort closed due to shortage of snow, the alpine team has taken 5 ski trips already to Boreal Ski resort, located in Tahoe. The alpine team has been doing continuous workouts for practice when not being able to ski or board, making the team stronger and improving their stamina and performance. Alpine team member, sophomore, Leslie Shank has been boarding for two years, and has been on the Red Bluff Alpine Team for his second The RBHS Varsity soccer team has an overall record of five wins,seven losses, and three ties, and their coach is Claudio Martinez. They played Chico on Wednesday the 17th and they tied 1-1. I spoke with Jose Gar- cia 12 who plays goalie. Jose's team goal for the sea- son is to make it all the way to the finals. Jose Garcia's 12 fa- vorite part about playing soccer for the high school is "being a team leader". Senior Jose Garcia started playing soccer at the age of five, and what he does for a pregame warm up is that "I listen to mu- sic to warm me up." Red Bluff Varsity soccer will play Foothill at Foothill high school then they will play Pleas- ant Valley. Then Red Bluff High School Varsity soccer team will ten play Shasta High School, then they will play Enterprise. Jonathan Valencia, senior says that his favorite part about high school soccer," My favor- ite part of playing the midfielder position and passing the ball to my teammates in games". Valencia has been playing since he was ten years old. His favorite soccer player is Ron- aldinho because he was the complete soccer player. Jonathan Valencia's goal for his senior year of high school soccer is to be the best soccer player that can help his team to win games. Valencia's favorite part about soccer "Is doing all kinds of skill moves." Some of the RBHS Varsity soccer team include that they average at least one goal per match and have over 200 steals and have 7.8 saves per game which twice as much the na- tional average for high school soccer. RBHS has scored more than 20 goals in sixteen matches. Senior Jesus Meza's favorite part about his final year soccer season are the pop tarts that are provided. Jesus Meza's favorite soccer player is Antoine Griezmann. His team goal for his final year of high school soccer is for the "Varsity team to make it to the finals and to win the finals." This year's Red Bluff High School Varsity Soccer team consists of twenty two players. The RBHS has four soccer cap- tains. Varsity Boys Soccer JV Boys Basketball Frosh Boys Basketball Alpine year now. When asked on if he prefers freestyle boarding or competition better, he responded "I love the competition, but I prefer freestyle boarding, it is more relaxing, especially feeling the mountain air." Snowboarder Hunter Wilhite, a freshman who has been boarding for 5 years is starting his first year on the Red Bluff Alpine team. When asked on what he could improve on, he said, "Quick turns, when I get those down I will definitely improve", while other boarders, such as Jakob Fregoso had a different approach, he responded, "There is nothing I can improve on, I am the greatest to ever live." Alpine is not only about the competition either, members of the team have opportunities to be with friends and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery. Ski and snowboard races taking place every Monday, it is essential for the racers to practice on Sundays. The Freshmen Boys Basketball team is currently looking to improve this season after losing their first league game to the Chico High School basketball team. A freshman at Red Bluff High School, Garrett Freeman, has been playing basketball since he was seven years old and hopes to play in college, as well. Freeman also explained that it was his father, Stephen Freeman, who convinced him to start playing basketball due to the fact that he was athletic and unusually tall for his age. When asked what his personal goal for this season is, Freeman said, "My personal goal for this season is to score twenty-five points in a single game. I believe I can achieve this goal by working on my shot and being quicker on offense and getting open shots more often. Our goal as a team is to win league and to become closer as a team," said Freeman. Freshman, Kurtis Rodriguez, has been playing basketball for as long as he can remember and hopes to play throughout the rest of high school. When asked what his favorite part about playing basketball is, Rodriguez replied, "I enjoy scoring points, winning games, and creating valuable bonds with my teammates." Rodriguez explained that his personal goal for this season is to become a better player and do whatever he can to help the team win. Rodriguez stated that he believes hi entire team, including himself, could work on their defense. The boys play their next game on Thursday, January 18th. The Red Bluff High School junior varsity boys basketball team has a leaugue record of 3 - 1 before Thursday's game against Pleasant Valley. Interviewed first was sophomore Justin Hinkston, point guard. First, Hinkston was asked how he thinks their team will be this year he said he feels they will be pretty good this year. Hinkston explains the boy's best skill this season is running the court what they need to work on is their defense. The coach, Mr. Armstrong, is presumed to be pretty cool and kinda of strict, but he is encouraging in Hinkston's o p i n i o n . As an i n d i v i d u a l , H i n k s t o n 's says he needs to work on his passing. T h e i r greatest competitor this season is going to be either Pleasant Valley or Foothill. Hinkston has been playing since he was 4 years old. H i n k s t o n's f a v o r i t e part about b a s k e t b a l l is, "The feel of running up and down the court." N e x t inter viewed w a s s o p h o m o r e Clay Ames, center/post. Ames believes that they are pretty good but they are getting better. In Ames's opinion their coach is, "Good and really into the game. He is also really encouraging and helpful." Ames has been playing for 6 years. He says he is best at rebounding down low on the block. Lastly interviewed was sophomore Hunter Miller, shooting guard. Miller states that he has been playing since he was 5 years old. Miller explains that "Our coach is super cool but hasn't added me back on snapchat yet."
