People in the Milwaukee and Madison areas who want to quit smoking will be able to get free medication and coach- ing to kick the habit, thanks to the grant. All interested participants will receive three months of Chantix pills, an aid to help smokers quit, and coaching from doctors within the UW-CTRI system. A portion of the partici- pants will get nicotine patches and extended med- ication. Each participant will earn $260 for completing the study, titled Quitting Using Intensive Treatments Study, or QUITS. The QUITS study is free of charge. QUITS is designed to answer two questions — whether combining these medications can boost quit- ting rates and whether extending the use of these medications for six months can boost quit rates. "We expect both treat- ment enhancements — com- bining varenicline and nico- tine patch and extending medication duration — will yield higher cessation rates among people trying to quit," said UW-CTRI Director of Research Dr. Tim Baker. "Smokers and their clinicians are calling for cessation treatment options that can substan- tially increase current mod- est quit rates. We believe the proposed enhancements will do just that." The UW-CTRI is partner- ing with the UW Department of Medicine Cardiology Division on the study, with Baker and UW Health Preventive Cardiology Director Dr. James Stein serving as prin- cipal investigators. To volunteer for the study, visit www.EndCigs.com or call 877-363-2447.
