Tiebreaker 1 3. Tiebreaker 2 Thank You all who played, see you later this year! - Julia Skating: Wisconsin natives takes to the track at West Allis for Olympic trials them." Pearson, who has been involved with speedskating for over 30 years and earned his business administration and management degree from the University of Utah, highlighted some of the big names that will be taking part in the trials — including Waukesha North graduate Mitch Whitmore. "We've got all our Wisconsin natives like Whitmore, he's probably one of our top skaters that's got a chance for success not only at the trials but also over in South Korea," Pearson said. "Sugar Todd, she's from Nebraska but has lived in the Wisconsin area for a long time. She's also a 500-meter specialist just like Mitch. She'll have a strong showing there. "There are a whole bunch of other Wisconsin natives that are probably just super pumped to get to that level. They might be a little bit younger and people to watch in four years, but there will be a bunch of club skaters and locals from this region competing." Whitmore competed in the 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games, his best finish com- ing in '14 when he took 27th in the 500. "Our main focus is on the Olympics, but we still had four World Cups leading up to this point in the year," Whitmore said. "I've actual- ly been out here since (Dec. 19) getting used to the ice at sea level. Every rink is dif- ferent besides, so I should be ready to go." The Waukesha native's best finish in high-end com- petition was fourth at the 2016-17 Long Track World Single Distance Championships. "Growing up in Milwaukee with a good his- tory of speedskating, it's pretty exciting that we're going to have the trials here, especially because a few of the days have already been sold out," Whitmore said. "It's a cool event and there's a lot riding on it. Nobody is prequaified so it's going to be pretty exciting to watch." Whitmore said there will be a two-week camp at the Pettit following the trials for those who qualify to get used to the ice. "The biggest factor is that we get used to competing at a high level at similar ice where we're going to com- pete at the Olympics," Whitmore said. "Paul Golomski, the (Zamboni) driver has done a pretty good job making the ice as similar to what it will be like there as possible." Other names to watch include former world cham- pions Brittany Bowe and Heather Bergsma as well as Joey Mantia and former Olympic gold medalist Shani Davis. "Brian Hansen, he's a Chicago kid who has a sil- ver medal from the team pursuit event in 2010," Pearson said. "He's coming back to the sport after he took a few years off. Those are our top athletes who shouldn't have much of a problem at the trials, but I've seen crazy things hap- pen. Some guys rise to the occasion, and that's what makes it exciting." continued from Page 11 Photo courtesy of U.S. Speedskating Nick Pearson is the competition director at the U.S. Speedskating Olympic Trials at the Pettit National Ice Center.
