By DAVE FIDLIN Special to the Post SHOREWOOD — State legislation con- cerning how retail properties are assessed will not be taken up until January, but municipal leaders across the county worry how residents' tax bills will be perceived in the years ahead. Talk swirling around so-called dark stores legislation has been occurring throughout much of this year. A bill has been presented in both branches of the Legislature that could lower assessments on how commercial properties are assessed when vacant buildings are in close proximi- ty. A number of municipalities across the county have a large portion of commercial properties, compared to residential. Such suburbs as Greendale, Greenfield, West Milwaukee and Wauwatosa top the list. Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke, who chairs the Intergov- ernmental Cooperation Council of Milwaukee County, said one-third of his community has commercial establish- ments — and the munic- ipality continues to evolve its list of retail- ers with new develop- ments, such as 84South, sprouting up. "This could result in a huge tax increase for our residential property owners," Neitzke said Monday at this month's ICC meeting, which met in Shorewood.
