of the very first openly transgen-
der people to play a major trans-
gender character in a scripted
television drama in the U.S. She
plays Cotton Brown, Carlotta's
transgender daughter, who works
at the beauty salon. Unfortunate-
ly, their relationship has been
strained as Carlotta doesn't fully
accept Cotton's transition from
male to female. Season 2 finds
Cotton struggling to find a way to
re-enter society after a stint in
prison.
The show's recurring characters
are played by a mix of up-and-
comers, established recording art-
ists and even a former supermodel.
Lenny Kravitz ("The Hunger
Games," 2012) portrays Roland
Crane, Alexandra's father and a
legendary rocker. Naomi Campbell
("Empire") has a recurring role as
Alexandra's alcoholic mother,
Rose. Tyrese Gibson ("Furious 7,"
2015) stars as Carlotta's boyfriend,
Pastor Bobby Harris, who often
clashes with Cotton.
This season, Paris Jackson —
daughter of the late King of Pop
Michael Jackson — has been pro-
moted to a recurring role. In fact,
the young Jackson made her pro-
fessional acting debut in season 1
of "Star." She plays Rachel Wells, a
social media expert who was hired
to promote Big Trouble. Evan Ross
("90210") will recur as bad boy DJ
Angel, Jahil's nephew, while Elijah
Kelley ("The New Edition Story")
has landed a role as Ayanna's as-
sociate, Andy.
Art imitated life in season 1
when Missy Elliott guest starred as
a legendary rapper known as
Pumpkin. Other season 1 guest
stars included Gladys Knight, Big
Boi, Tiny, Porsha Williams and Kelly
Price.
"Star" has struck a real chord
with viewers, so much so that
Fox has recently announced the
second season has been extend-
ed to 18 episodes. That's the
same number of episodes as
companion series "Empire" war-
rants — another Fox hit about a
prominent family that owns an
entertainment company. Starring
Terrence Howard ("Hustle &
Flow," 2005) and Taraji P. Henson
("The Curious Case of Benjamin
Button," 2008), the program fo-
cuses on the music moguls at the
top, while "Star" follows the in-
dustry from the perspective of
those who are just getting start-
ed. This season, "Empire" serves
as a strong lead-in for Star and
her crew.
Queen Latifah, Benjamin
Bratt, Ryan Destiny, Jude
Demorest and Brittany
O'Grady in "Star"
