A
s broadcasters fight to
stay alive in today's uber-
competitive ratings game,
it seems that music is the
answer. Reality TV singing and
dancing competitions are as popu-
lar as ever, and Fox has added a
couple of sweeping dramas about
the music industry to appeal to
viewers.
Three supremely talented
young women claw their way to
the top in "Star," airing Wednes-
day, Nov. 8, on Fox. Now in its
second season, the series fea-
tures Jude Demorest ("Dallas")
as the show's namesake charac-
ter Star, while Ryan Destiny ("A
Girl Like Grace," 2015) and Brit-
tany O'Grady ("The Messen-
gers") round out the trio as Alex-
andra and Simone, respectively.
After a childhood spent in and
out of foster homes, Star is bent on
pursuing a career in music, and
she's invited her little sister, Simo-
ne, along for the ride. While New
Yorker Alexandra had a privileged
upbringing, she is just as deter-
mined to make it as her friends are,
having lived in her father's shadow
for too long. Together, the girls
form the singing group known as
Big Trouble.
The girls may be different, but
luckily they have the guidance of
Carlotta Brown (Queen Latifah,
"Last Holiday," 2006), a beauty sa-
lon owner-turned-talent manager.
A former singer in a '90s R&B duo
known as Mixed Harmony, Carlot-
ta knows a thing or two about the
music business. So did the girls'
former manager, Jahil (Benjamin
Bratt, "Law & Order"), but he has
faked his own death to avoid being
framed for murder.
This season, Alexandra's boy-
friend, Derek (Quincy Brown,
"Brotherly Love," 2015), must deal
with the possibility that he may
never walk again. As a result, Alex-
andra struggles to keep their ro-
mance alive and juggle the de-
mands of her promising career in
music.
In season 2, the girls celebrate
signing a potentially lucrative deal
with Midtown Sound. However,
they also contend with competi-
tion from R&B artist Noah Brooks,
played by two-time Grammy nomi-
nee Luke James ("The New Edition
Story"). Michael Michele ("ER")
also joins the season 2 cast as
Ayanna Floyd, Midtown Sound's
unsympathetic new president.
"Star" also features a ground-
breaking storyline involving
transgender and genderfluid
characters. When the show pre-
miered in December 2016, new-
comer Amiyah Scott became one
