The ensem- ble drama is inspired by the 1975 ABC television program and the 2003 blockbuster movie starring Academy Award nomi- nees Samuel L. Jackson and Col- lin Farrell. Although it only aired for two seasons, "S.W.A.T." made a big impression back in the day, be- yond its catchy theme song. The spinoff of "The Rookies" was a gritty, violent look at a police unit seldom seen on television. In the updated version, Stephanie Sig- man ("Narcos") stars as the no- nonsense Capt. Jessica Cortez, who oversees a group of highly trained, elite Los Angeles police officers led by Emmy winner She- mar Moore ("Criminal Minds") as Sgt. Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson. The intense action is set in Los Angeles, where a born-and- raised Harrelson is constantly at war with himself over his loyalty to the streets and his duty to his fellow officers. For public rela- tions purposes, he is abruptly put in command of his S.W.A.T. unit after a highly publicized event, making many enemies in the process. At the Television Critics Asso- ciation summer press tour, Moore spoke about how this se- ries would tackle real-world is- sues and differ from the big- budget movie and the often campy, dated television series. He told reporters, "We're taking on real life." Executive producer and showrunner Shawn Ryan ("The Shield") echoed these sentiments, saying: "This is a pro-cop show, but this is also a pro-community show. I want to see how the cops deal with peo- ple. I want to see how the peo- ple deal with cops." The show's creator, fellow executive pro- ducer and showrunner Aaron Rahsaan Thomas ("The Get Down"), wrote the series pre- miere, basing many plot points on his experiences growing up in Kansas City living next to a police officer and next to a vic- tim of police violence. California native Moore stars as a born leader, always ready for action, who must prove him- self worthy of his position to his peers. This is all too accurate of the consummate professional who spent 11 seasons portray- ing Supervisory Special Agent Feature this week
