The Public Works Department this week launched an online survey that will give participants an opportunity to weigh in on perceived problem spots throughout the city. The survey can be accessed at https://tinyurl.com/MKE- Ped-Plan. Hannig said other over- tures, including focus groups, will also be announced in the near future. The goal from the series of efforts, Hannig said, is to "develop a citywide pedes- trian plan that reflects the entire community." A draft version of the pedestrian plan, which will incorporate feedback from the forthcoming efforts, should be unveiled next spring for public review. A final plan is expected to go before the Common Council for adoption in June. Feedback is one of sever- al efforts playing a role in development of the pedes- trian plan, Hannig said. Other processes underway come through partnerships with Madison-based con- sulting firm Toole Design Group and the University of Wi s c o n s i n - M i lw a u k e e ' s urban planning depart- ment. "(Toole and UWM are) conducting a detailed analysis of all things relat- ed to walking in Milwaukee, including a crash analysis, a review of yielding behavior, pedestri- an counts and other pro- gram and policy reviews," Hannig said. "These analy- ses … will be used to devel- op recommendations to make walking and getting around safer and easier in Milwaukee." A federal grant is mak- ing the planning process possible, Hannig said. For its part, UWM researchers this summer unveiled results from a study pertaining to pedes- trian and bicycle safety in major urban areas across the U.S. Based on the study data, Milwaukee fell in the mid- dle, compared to other urban areas, in pedestrian and bicycle safety accom- modations. In a statement, UW pro- fessors Robert Schneider and Aida Sanatizadeh said improved travel data helped bring the study to fruition. Schneider and Sanatizadeh were among the researchers helming the study. The safest cities for pedestrians, based on the study's findings, were Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Minneapolis, New York City, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle. The least safe cities for pedestrians, according to the study, were Houston, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, San Antonio and Tampa. continued from Page 2
