Effort in response to increase in walking-related accidents By DAVE FIDLIN Special to the Post MILWAUKEE — In the first 9.5 months of this year, 17 pedestrians have died from vehicular-related accidents within Milwaukee. In 2016, a dozen pedestrians succumbed to injuries in the city. The rise in vehicle-pedestrian accidents, coupled with other factors, have prompted officials in Milwaukee to embark on a long- range planning exercise aimed at improv- ing accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists within the community. With the accident data in mind, James Hannig, the city's pedestrian and bicycle coordinator, said he and others within the Public Works Department wanted to take a page out of the bicycle master plan, which the Common Council adopted in 2010. "Milwaukeeans have likely noticed the city becoming increasingly more bicycle- friendly," Hannig said, pointing to the mas- ter plan as an example for the long-range planning efforts. One outward example of the growth of bike-friendly amenities is Bublr Bikes, the ride-share service that launched in Milwaukee in early 2015. In the years since, the number of Bublr Bikes stations increased throughout the city and inner- ring suburbs. Speaking to the planning effort under- way, Hannig said, "We firmly believe adopt- ing a citywide pedestrian plan will similar- ly help in transforming Milwaukee into a better, safer place to walk and get around." As a first step in assembling a plan, the city hosted a pedestrian plan meeting Monday. A small group of enthusiasts gathered for the open house-style gather- ing, held at the Central Library downtown, to learn about the planning effort under- way..
