FOR THE Wedding, Anniversary or Engagement Announcement Retailers want lower assessments in some communities if vacant buildings nearby By DAVE FIDLIN Post Staff ST. FRANCIS — With a possible decision coming out of Madison in the near future, city leaders across Milwaukee County this week implored state lawmakers to consider municipalities' welfare while reviewing so- called "dark stores" legislation. In recent years, a number of national big box and mid-size retailers have sought low- ered assessments on their properties when they are near vacant buildings. Lawyers representing the retailers have argued the companies have been paying above-market figures. Courts have ruled in favor of the retail giants in a number of instances, meaning residential property owners in some com- munities have shouldered a growing share of the tax pie, compared to other property classifications. Municipal leaders, however, have argued the rulings have been unfair and could lead to unintended consequences in the road ahead. The Intergovernmental Cooperation Council of Milwaukee County on Monday directed Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke to reach out to state lawmakers represent- ing the region and discuss ongoing con- cerns with the dark stores law in its cur- rent state. The 19 mayors and village presidents serve on the ICC, as does County Executive Chris Abele. Neitzke serves as chairman of the ICC, which held its monthly meeting at the St. Francis Civic Center.
