Ella llegó a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía 10 años de edad, recuerda que una de las cosas más difíci- les a las que se enfrentó fue aprender el idioma inglés, ya que como no sabía nada sus compañeros se burla- ban, llorando le decía a su mamá que no quería seguir estudiando y además quería regresar a su país natal. Tiempo después Arlette pudo aprender inglés y avanzar en sus estudios, tanto así que hoy a través de Estrella Estudiantil, representa a todos los estudiantes hispanos de las escuelas públicas de la ciudad. "La verdad pasé cosas muy difíciles al llegar a los Estados Unidos. Recuerdo que cursaba el quinto grado escolar y llegar a un nuevo país, a una nueva escuela y conocer nuevas personas fue complicado. Dejar a mi familia y no verlos por mucho tiempo ha sido muy tris- te. Creo que los jóvenes como yo que llegan a este país tienen que esforzarse el doble para conseguir sus sue- ños, debido a que no es tan fácil obtener becas, estar siempre tratando de tener buenas calificaciones para conseguir ayuda. La verdad todo lo que hago es por mis padres, quiero ayudarlos; ellos han batallado mucho, y el dar lo mejor en mis estudios es de alguna manera agradecer todo su esfuerzo", mencionó nuestra Estrella Estudiantil. Los deportes también han sido fundamentales para que Arlette Meléndez siga enfocada en sus estudios, ella asegura que el jugar voleibol la ha mantenido alejada de cosas negativas y además ha desarrollado confianza en si misma y ha demostrado sus habilidades de liderazgo y su capacidad para trabajar con otros, así como ayudar a estudiantes a conseguir un objetivo común. "Mi meta es estudiar la carrera de marketing y hacer mi propia compañía. Aún no tengo decidido la univer- sidad que iré pero seguro que buscaré la mejor opción para mi. También tengo pensado seguir jugando volei- bol, ya que es una de mis pasiones", aseguró Arlette. Esta joven estudiante de Southeast High School también destaca como uno de los mejores alumnos aca- démicamente de primer nivel próximos a graduarse. Es miembro de la Sociedad Nacional de Honor, Key Club, BPA y la tesorera de la clase de Seniors. "Creo que todos deberíamos estar pensando en obtener una carrera profesional, no conformarnos; ya que el solo hecho de tener un diploma de preparatoria o un título universitario te abre muchas puertas", agregó la estudiante de Southeast High School.
