Cuando una persona realiza una mala acción, esta tiende a afectar a toda la comunidad en general en una reacción en cadena, a esto se le conoce como efecto domi- nó. Este tema sale a colación debido a varios hechos que se han suscitado a nivel nacional donde algunas perso- nas de origen latino se han visto envueltas en crímenes, situaciones que traen consigo una problemática que afec- ta a la comunidad latina en general. Quizás se pregunte: ¿Cómo podría afectarnos? En realidad, este tipo de situaciones conllevan que algunos sectores de la población del país se formen una serie de prejuicios, donde debido a la ignorancia, puede llegar a escalar de la discriminación hasta la violencia hacia un grupo específico de personas. Pongamos el siguiente ejemplo: Una persona está platicando con otra, una de ellas le comenta que las per- sonas que tienen el cabello de color verde tienden a ser muy violentas, quien lo está escuchando no ha conoci- do nunca a un sujeto con estas características. Tiempo después, al ir caminando por la calle, se encuentra a un individuo con el cabello verde, inmediatamente recuerda lo que había escuchado sobre ellos, que todos eran muy violentos, por lo que toma la decisión de "defenderse" basándose únicamente en los prejuicios, golpeando a la persona de cabello verde. ¿Qué opina usted sobre esta situación? ¿Alguna vez ha basado algunas de sus decisiones basadas en prejui- cios? El escritor William Hazlitt declaró "El prejuicio es hijo de la ignorancia". En ocasiones podemos escuchar a líderes de organiza- ciones o políticos quizás dando mensajes negativos sobre ciertos sectores de la comunidad solo porque pasó un caso negativo y quizás eso empieza a generar prejuicios. Este tipo de argumentos son los que debemos de evitar como comunidad, y realmente no juzgar a los demás por que son diferentes o tienen otra opinión, sino respetar y conocer realmente quien es esa persona, cuales son sus principio, sus sueños e ideales. Por esta razón, es importante que la comunidad lati- na comience a combatir los prejuicios, empezando por mantenernos unidos, pero también aprendiendo sobre la amplia diversidad étnica y cultural que existe en los Estados Unidos. Si la comunidad latina se esfuerza en combatir los prejuicios que aquejan a la población en general, será un gran paso para seguir avanzando como seres huma- nos. ¿Cómo podemos lograrlo? Evitando formar prejui- cios sobre personas que son diferentes a usted, recuerde que no porque alguien tenga el cabello verde, eso signifi- ca que sea violento. Seguramente ha escuchado o leído noticias sobre actos violentos, donde en ocasiones algunos medios de comunicación se enfocan únicamente en la raza de las personas que los perpetuaron, más que en lo lamenta- ble del suceso. ¿Cómo cree que afecte estas situaciones a los grupos étnicos involucrados? El hecho primordial es que las acciones que reali- ce un solo individuo, no debe definir a un sector de la población en general. Los crímenes pueden ser cometi- dos por cualquier persona, no importando cual sea su ori- gen racial. De igual manera, aquellos que realizan labo- res para ayudar a otros, pueden ser de cualquier parte del mundo.
