In fact, given the current political, environmental and economic situations, we could probably all use a laugh. Luckily, prime time is answering that call with a di- verse slate of new comedies. This fall's television season of- fers viewers several sitcoms and comedy-drama hybrids with broad appeal. These include ABC's "The Mayor" (Oct. 3), CBS's "Young Sheldon" (Sept. 25), "Me, Myself & I" (Sept. 25) and "9JKL" (Oct. 2), Fox's "The Orville" (Sept. 10) and "Ghosted" (Oct. 1), and HBO's "Barry" (TBA). Premiering Sunday, Sept. 10, Fox's "The Orville" is the first out of the gate, or space dock, as it were. A comedic take on se- ries like "Star Trek" and movies like "Galaxy Quest" (1999), the show centers on the crew of USS Orville (ECV-197) 400 years in the future. Creator Seth MacFar- lane ("Family Guy") stars as Capt. Ed Mercer, while Adrianne Palicki ("Friday Night Lights") portrays his first officer and ex- wife, Kelly Grayson. Other cast members include Penny Johnson Jerald ("24"), Scott Grimes ("ER") and Norm Macdonald ("Saturday Night Live"), who voices an amorphous alien creature. Fox also presents the buddy comedy "Ghosted," set to pre- miere Sunday, Oct. 1, alongside the season premieres of heavy hitters "Bob's Burgers," "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy." The new single-camera, live-ac- tion sitcom stars Adam Scott ("Parks and Recreation") as uni- versity professor Max Allison, a devoted conspiracy theorist. He teams up with paranormal skep- tic Leroy Wright (Craig Robin- son, "The Office") to investigate supernatural occurrences. They soon uncover evidence of a larg- er mystery that could threaten the future of the human race. Ally Walker ("Colony") and Ad- eel Akhtar ("The Night Manag- er") also star. Art imitates life in CBS's "9JKL," premiering Monday, Oct. 2. Husband and wife Mark Feuerstein ("Royal Pains") and Dana Klein ("Friends") loosely based the series on their own lives.
