Nor is this Grace's first stab at the Blood Drive; she barely blinks when she feeds a would-be romancer into the nest of razor- sharp teeth concealed beneath her car's hood, getting drenched in blood in the process. What follows is a 13-episode, over-the-top gore-fest that pays clear homage to the 1970s grind- house films that inspired the series. It's rich with parody, dark humor and plenty of camp — and lots and lots and LOTS of blood. Each episode plays out like a mini horror flick, with a focus on a particular grindhouse subgenre. For the uninitiated, "grind- house" refers to exploitation films, typically featuring sensational vio- lence, freakish characters, explicit sex and any number of just plain bizarre elements. Though grind- house theaters began to see a de- cline in the '80s, a number of mod- ern movies pay homage to the films – think Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses" (2003), Robert Rodriguez's "Machete" (2010) and "Planet Terror," or Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" (the lat- ter two were released together as a double feature, "Grindhouse," in 2007). "Blood Drive" is hardly the first throwback to genre, but it's breaking ground in bringing this specific flavor of cinema to the small screen. Reviews for the show have been mostly favorable so far, though some criticize the campy writing and reliance on arguably shallow, over-the-top gore and sexuality. The thing is, though, that's exactly what "Blood Drive" is going for. All the "bad" ele- ments are intentional, which is clear from the sheer volume of outrageous nonsense that's hurled at the viewer from start to finish. We're obviously not meant to take this too seriously. And yet there's still a recogniz- able story present in the two leads who find themselves thrown together, and in good-guy Arthur in particular: "Arthur is the last good cop in a world gone mad," Ritchson said of his character in an interview for HorrorFuel.com. "I think what we find as his journey continues [is that] he starts to look more and more like that which he is trying to bring down. It is a journey of re- demption and finding himself in the midst of this absolutely insane grindhouse world." Colin Cunningham as seen in "Blood Drive"
