It seems that the further you go up the dial, the more showrunners can get away with in terms of salty language, graphic vi- olence and gratuitous nudity. "Blood Drive" has all of this in spades, and then some: fast cars, cannibalism, mutant zombies, eyeless lawmen, homicidal luna- tics, explosions of all kinds and, most importantly, vehicles fuelled by human blood — this show has it all. Needless to say, it's not for the faint of heart. Catch a new episode of the envelope-pushing series when it airs Wednesday, July 19, on Syfy. The show is set in a dystopian "distant future" of 1999. Los An- geles is a lawless wasteland where oil costs $2,000 a barrel, water is strictly rationed, and the police force is brutal and corrupt, working under the motto of "we kill be- cause we care." Ruling over it all is Heart Enter- prises: a nefarious corporate beast with a baleful finger in every pie, including the "meanest, nastiest, filthiest" road race ever, the Blood Drive, for which the show is named. It's a high-octane, blood- soaked cross-country death race with a $10-million prize for the winner and a grisly demise for the losers of each leg. There's a very "Mad Max" (1979) and "Death Race 2000" (1975) feel to the whole thing, but there's one unique (and highly in- convenient) aspect to the Blood Drive: The cars run on human blood. The charming event is pre- sided over by Julian Slink, a car- toonish, steampunky master of ceremonies and employee of Heart Enterprises, whose twisted charac- ter is played to top-hatted perfec- tion by the scene-stealing Colin Cunningham ("Falling Skies"). The race is largely populated by ghoulish characters with names like Rib Bone and Fat Elvis, but there's a distinct outlier this time around: Arthur Bailey (Alan Ritch- son, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," 2013) is the city's last good cop, who just wants to make his city a less violent place. Instead, he gets Shanghaied into the race by Slink, who, if nothing else, sees the entertainment value in the straight-edge, square-jawed cop. Mere seconds and a neck im- plant later, Arthur finds himself paired up with an unwilling race partner, Grace D'Argento (Christina Ochoa, "Animal Kingdom"), a butt- kicking, lollipop-sucking femme fa- tale whose noble motive for partici- pating in the race — to help her Feature this week
