P ickingabeer from one of the 30 on tap at Beer Thirty Bottle Bottle Shop and Pour House can be intimidating. But co-owners Olive Moredock and Craig Renfroe want it less so for those who have not been initiated into the world of craft beers. Beer Thirty — spelled out and no numbers, according to them — aims to make beer accessible to drink- ers of all experiences. With 30 beers on tap available on any given night, patrons are encouraged to sample beers to see if they like it. "Some of our favor- ite customers are the ones that come in and say that they don't like beer or that they're new to beer. Helping them navigate that introduction and pro- cess," Moredock said. One of her favorite moments is helping people who think they don't like beer. Picking one out is intimidating if you don't know what you like, she said. More than the beers on tap, Beer Thirty also has more than 300 bottled beers avail- able. The venue draws locals and tourists alike with its vast beer garden that welcomes kids and dogs alike. The pour house just celebrated its third anniversary and has made itself into a neighborhood staple. It isn't unusual to see a birthday party or a nonprofit's event at one of the 30-foot long tables, Moredock said. "I think that's a big piece of why we've be- come a popular place," she said. "People are just very welcoming. It's a warm, friendly, social environment where you can meet neighbors." The tables encour- age conversations be- tween different groups while the dart board, ping pong table and cornhole boards give a sense of play. Moredock and Renfroe designed and imagined the space by borrowing ele- ments from other beer places they enjoyed. On any given night, it's not unusual to see dogs trotting around the beer garden. On a recent day, the two sat in the garden before the pour house opened. Two dogs trotted around, sniff- ing around for head pats and shade. "We're dog lovers and we have quite a few friends and fam- ily that have kids," Moredock said. Plenty of businesses have just been a flash in the frying pan and the duo is doing its best not to be that. Tucked away off the Porter Street and Bay Avenue exit on Highway 1, it's easy to quickly drive by the pour house. The beer garden's first couple of months were good and saw a lot of traffic, Renfroe said. But he was cautious about that success.
