Several city officials have gone on record in support of looking closely at the MPD's vehicle pursuit policy and making possible tweaks. Alderman Bob Donovan has long been a staunch advocate of loos- ening the prohibitions officers currently face. In a news release issued Monday, Donovan said he is hoping Milwaukee leaders will take a look at what recently transpired in Kansas City, Kan. The police chief in that city recently reversed its restraint policy and is again giving offi- cers the leeway to pursue fleeing motorists in a full range of scenarios. "Every day in Milwaukee, we are seeing brazen acts of reckless driving, blatant red light running, speeding and aggressive vehicle moves that put lives in danger," Donovan said in the news release. He continued, "Too often, drivers pull away and flee from police vehicles because those drivers know that there won't be a pursuit. It has become almost laughable for these drivers." In addition to the ever-fluctuating vehi- cle pursuit statistics, Regan said there were other notable pieces of data commis- sioners gleaned from the 14-page report. According to MPD statistics, the medi- an age of known persons involved in the pursuits has drastically decreased. In 2003, the median age was 40. Last year, the medi- an age was 18 years. Speed was another factor that was note- worthy, Regan said. Forty-eight percent of last year's vehicle pursuits resulted in motorists attempting to flee police at speeds in excess of 75 miles per hour — another increase from prior years. The full report can be viewed online at the city's website, www.city.milwaukee.gov. 2 • Milwaukee County Post • May 19, 2017 Volume 23, issue number 20 The Milwaukee Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414-744-6370 News display and advertising FAX: 414-375-7070 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: 414-744-6370 Barry Richards: Advertising Representative — ext. 13 brichards@conleynet.com Julia LeGath: Advertising Representative — ext. 17 jlegath@conleynet.com Jim Baumgart Advertising Sales Director — 262-513-2621 jbaumgart@conleynet.com For editorial questions: Dan Muckelbauer Editor 262-513-2626 dmuck@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee Post 3397 S.
