Their exhibit is to be cov- ered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Endangered Species Day. The vanishing illustrates how the critically endan- gered gorillas are threat- ened with extinction in the wild and demonstrates the immediate need to save wild animals and their habitats, according to a news release from the zoo. The six gorillas are among the most popular animals on exhibit. Because of their intelligence, they're given enrichment items — toys — to keep them mentally engaged, said Jenny Diliberti, public relations coordinator for the zoo. "I think some of the fasci- nation is that they are so closely related to humans," she said, "and how they get along and don't get along with others." Other members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums highlight the threat posed to 10 endan- gered species. Five are at the Milwaukee County Zoo: sharks, black rhino, chee- tah and whooping crane, as well as gorillas. The zoo's two sharks are leopard sharks, which is not one of the endangered species, Diliberti said. The other five highlighted by various AZA members are: the African penguin, the Asian elephant, the sea turtle, the Western pond turtle and the vaquita, a small porpoise that high- lights the urgency to act now. The vaquita, of which possibly fewer than 30 sur- vive in Mexico's Gulf of California, could be extinct in the wild very shortly as they keep getting caught in gill nets used by illegal fish- ing operations, the World Wildlife Fund announced this week. The U.S. Navy had earlier announced it would send highly trained bomb-locating bottlenose dolphins to locate and save some of their smaller, criti- cally endangered cousins. By comparison, the Western lowland gorillas, which number about 100,000, are the most numer- ous of four gorilla sub- species, according to the WWF. There are fewer than 900 mountain gorillas in the wild. For contrast, there are 364 captive lowland gorillas at AZA institutions in North America. Gorillas are critically endangered due to disease, habitat loss and illegal hunting, which occurs regu- larly despite anti-poaching efforts, the Milwaukee County Zoo said in its release. Many of the planet's 2 million to 8 million species could disappear by the end of the century, the zoo said. Guests can visit the Remains to Be Seen Cart, which will include various artifacts from endangered species. Zoo Pride volun- teers will answer questions and AZA animal trading cards will be available for visitors to take home. Visitors can sign a special banner, pledging to do what they can to save endangered animals. Information on the vari- ous species in the wild is at each exhibit.
