An overwhelming majority of voters — 72 percent — said they would not favor a plan to increase the county's imposition of a wheel tax from the current $30 figure to $60. An advisory, nonbinding refer- endum question was presented to voters in the city of Milwaukee and all 18 suburban communities within Milwaukee County's limits during Tuesday's spring general election. According to preliminary data from the Milwaukee County Election Commission, 67,655 vot- ers, or 72.21 percent, voted "no" to the question. The balance of 26,037 voters, or 27.79 percent gave the question a "yes" vote. Since the question was non- binding, the voters' response does not seal any future decisions, though it does send a message about how wheel taxes have been received. County Executive Chris Abele has been an advocate of the wheel tax, based on the current setup of state law and how revenue limits are imposed on counties and municipalities. Faced with a deep deficit as the 2017 budget was being prepared, Abele had initially proposed a $60 wheel tax to shore up the gulf. But the County Board ultimately whit- tled the tax down to $30.
