said he deeply believes
the government was
wrong to imprison
Japanese and Japanese-
Americans during
World War II, he and
others in the Watson-
ville Japanese commu-
nity take pride in being
Americans.
More than pride,
they're looking to keep
the Japanese heritage
strong in Watsonville
through outreach and
programs. The JACL
chapter provides a
number of classes to
the public including
bonsai, taiko drum-
ming and other cultural
programs.
Hashimoto and oth-
ers want their children
and grandchildren to
lay down roots South
County.
"What we're trying to
do in the high schools is
teach all the youngsters
and encourage them to
get degrees by which
they can stay and raise
a family in Watson-
ville," he said.
