The Press-Dispatch Continued from page 2 all this debt is truly for naught because the pro- grams that it's financing do little to reduce poverty. If anything, they encour- age it, because they don't follow the reform model of the '90s: reduce depen- dence by requiring work as a condition for receiv- ing aid. Recipients can do nothing all day and still get their taxpayer-fund- ed checks. Oddly, the president's thinking seems to have shifted on this issue, but in the wrong direction. A campaign ad in 2008 fea- tured the slogan: "The Obama record: moved people from welfare to work." But now the pres- ident is removing work requirements from these programs requirements. Of the 79 means-tested welfare programs, on- ly three had even partial work requirements. Now Obama has pushed the number down to two. That's a real problem. Able-bodied adults on wel- fare should be required to work, prepare for work, or at least look for a job. That's not too much to ask. After all, isn't the whole point of welfare to give people a helping hand, not reduce them to a state of permanent help- lessness? great country . . . great enough to help a man finan- cially when he's in trouble," he tells a reporter who asks him why. "I'm back in the black. And I just thought I should return it." Not everybody can re- turn it, of course. But surely this is the mindset that should prevail when it comes to changes in wel- fare policy. To truly help able-bod- ied, non-elderly welfare recipients, we need to encourage genuine inde- pendence. We need to re- spect their human dignity by enabling them to get to the point where they can provide for themselves. Unless we restore work ed nicely in a scene in the movie "Cinderella Man" (which I highlighted in a previous column). It's about the true-life story of boxer Jimmy Braddock. In the scene in question, we see him pay back the welfare funds that helped his family when they were desperately poor. H Sports versus politics big smear, about how Rom- ney is supposed to have caused a woman to die of cancer, has been exposed as a lie by CNN, hardly a Republican network. What smears like this show is that the Obama administration cannot run on its track re- cord, so it has to run on dis- tractions from the country's real problems. When Senator Harry Reid Continued from page 2 The Obama campaign's claims that Mitt Romney hasn't paid his income tax- es, and demands that Gover- nor Romney disprove this un- substantiated allegation, that raises an obvious question as to why the Internal Revenue Service has not prosecuted Romney, instead of leaving that to a partisan politician in an election year. What makes this a farce emotionally satisfying rhet- oric and a promise to give them something for noth- ing, to be paid for by taxing somebody else, then Obama is their man. This is not to say that the public will in fact get something for nothing or that rich people will just pay higher taxes, when it is easy for them to escape taxation by investing overseas—cre- ating jobs overseas. The prophet Jeremiah well What's new at your library? is that Senator Reid himself has not released his own income tax records, while claiming that Romney's re- lease of only two years of his income tax records is not enough, even though it has been enough for other can- didates in other years. If Mitt Romney releas- es all his tax records going back to his childhood, it will not put a stop to this fishing expedition, much less bring an apology when those re- cords show nothing illegal. It will just provide more materi- al for making more distract- ing claims to change the sub- ject from the track record of the Obama administration. So the person we hire will ran against President Jim- my Carter back in 1980, he asked the question that should be asked of the vot- ers when any president is seeking reelection: "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" Four years later, when Reagan ran for reelection, he implicitly asked and an- swered that same question in a campaign commercial titled "Morning in Ameri- ca," which listed the ways the country was better off than it had been four years earlier. Don't look for any "Morning in America" ads from Obama. "Mourning in America" might be more ap- propriate. This election is a test, not PRONTO it's the paper, No more waiting for the mail!
