The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, August 22, 2012 B-3 Lady Chargers soccer has tough first week soccer season for the re- building Pike Central Lady Chargers, but Head Coach, Alisha Knight, saw some good things despite the two losses. One loss came at home and the second, the closest one, on the road. The Lady Chargers It was a rough start for the By Mike Johansen opened the season losing to the Vincennes Lady Alices 1-3 by the scores of 13-25, 25-21, 16-25 and 21-25. In the opening set of the match, the Lady Chargers used a serve by Haylea Harden to tie the match at 2-2, but then allowed Lincoln to score five straight points and they were never able to recover. Another nine point run by the Lady Alices had the match well out of hand. Only service points by Em- ily Howes and Michal Ashby allowed the game to get a little closer. Serves by Ashby had the pop ahead 13-7. Pike Cen- tral rallied on the serves by Ashby again to come within two, 12-14. A serve by Harden had them back at two, but the Lady Alices put the game away from that point to win 25-16. Ashby again had Pike Cen- tral an early edge, 2-1, but the Alices scored the next six points and stayed in front leading 16-7 until Em- ily Howes came to serve. Howes put PC down just 11- 16 and service points from Olivia Leighty and Lexie Shoultz had PC down just 19-21. Then the service er- ror bug hit and Lincoln es- caped, winning 25-21. "The first game nerves Lady Chargers ahead 4-2 in the second match with two falling for ace serves. The Lady Alices came back to lead 8-4 and 11-6 thanks to some net violations by the Lady Chargers. Serves by Lexie Shoultz brought the score back to 10-11. Ashby came to serve at 13-18 and served in four straight aces and used a spike by Olivia Leighty on a set by Harden for an 18-18 tie. After falling back 20-18, the Lady Char- gers rallied on the serves of Shoultz with three return er- rors by Lincoln and a return from Whann to score points for a 25-21 Pike Central win. Ashby served the Lady Chargers ahead in game three, but then Lincoln re- gained the momentum to were very apparent for the players and myself. We made some mistakes, but we will learn from them. We will face Vincennes again and we will be ready for them," said Coach Marla Stemle. Olivia Leighty led in at- Ashby 11, Shoultz 8, Morton 8, Howes 6, Whann 4 and Harden 4. Shoultz led in serving go- ing 17 for 17 with an ace and 10 points; Leighty 10 for 10, 3 points; Ashby 21 of 23 with 7 aces for 13 points; Howes 10 of 11 for 5 points; and Harden 10 of 12 with an ace for 2 points. Last Wednesday, the Lady Chargers were on the road facing the Washington Lady Hatchets and came home losing in five sets 25-17, 25- 23, 21-25, 24-26 and 10-15. "We went five games to- was our first game. There were a whole lot of jitters and they got the best of us. We started out right away with a shot on the goal by Allison Sheffler, but they got the first score and we fell apart fast," said Coach Knight. "This was a game I fully believe we could have won if we weren't so ner- vous. Presley Bryant had her first game as our new goalie, she was hesitant the first half, but by the second half she came out of her shell. She was more aggres- sive and they didn't score at all the second half." "My defensive line up (Kenna Longabaugh, Dani- elle Uppencamp, Lauren Luff and Ally Sutherland) has a lot of fresh faces, they are still learning to work together. North Knox took advantage of that and got in their two goals in the first half," added the coach. "The defense came out hard the second half and didn't let them score again. Lauren Luff got our sole goal off a corner kick that the goal keeper didn't get a good hold on. We had plenty of opportunities to score we just couldn't finish." Despite losing by 0-8 to an experienced Mount Vernon Team on the road Satur- day, the Lady Chargers still showed some positives dur- ing the match. "As bad as this score looks, it doesn't really rep- resent the way we played. Mount Vernon is a very talented team. We came in ready to work hard, the girls had a hard time on the offensive end," added Coach Sutherland. "But the defense and Presley (goal- keeper) kept us in the game. This was Presley's game to shine, she really played ag- gressively. Mount Vernon took shot after shot on her and she handled it well for only her second game. My offense came out the sec- ond half and started getting shots off on the goal. As bad as the score looks I think this was a really great game, my girls really started to come together."
