The Oak- land City Lions served meals every day for the communi- ty and workers, and they had some relief from companies who helped cook and serve to help out with the disaster. The winner of Curliest Hair was Sophie 6 p.m. Oakland City time, the Sweet Corn Festival pa- rade had just began when the storm sirens went off. The storm brought hail, rain, and wind, and lasted for quite a long time. All of us in Oak- land City were in a bad spot. After the terrific and damag- ing storm had passed and we got our senses under control, we saw the damage it had caused. We saw street after street covered with trees and power lines, plus wa- ter that the drains couldn't take. Highway 64 heading east was blocked, so most of us found our way to the north side and Highway 57 by way of Sugar Ridge Road. Winslow and Petersburg had lots of rain but only pea-size hail for a short time. Norm and I saw and heard the hail go from pea-size to baseball- size as it hit the windshield. The rides that were set up in Wirth Park were dam- with whatever had to be done is what Oakland City was all about, whether it was to clear off a street, take pic- tures for insurance, repair or cover damaged hous- es, serving meals, or other things that needed doing. The kindness is appreciat- ed so much, so a big thank you to everyone that had a part, especially the electric people who worked to get the lights back on and the many offices not mentioned. Saturday night was the gospel singing at the Mar- ket Place Parking Lot in Winslow, where 30-plus peo- ple brought their lawn chairs and listened to music played by Mark McCandless, Mike Tepe, Tom Spencer, Bobby Small, and vocals by Bren- da Thompson, Thelma Barnes, Jim Deen, and mu- sicians Carl Kelley, Jake Mc- Candless, and David Wayne. Pastor Harold Bayer of New Hope Baptist Church in Bird- seye gave a short message. People who passed by on Main St. slowed down to see what was happening and some stopped. They will be there for your listening pleasure the first Saturday of each month until it gets too cold to play. The next date is Sept. 1, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. Singers are invited to join them. Janet Fithian's daughter Kathy and her husband Jesse Wonder were guests in Hous- ton, Tex. at the Christ Em- bassy Church. They heard Joel Olsteen give a talk. The Winslow Lions will be serving a buffet dinner at the Trading Post Friday, August 10. The dinner is $10.50 for adults and $5 for kids 5-12, and it includes pan-fried cat- fish or deep fried chicken, salad, vegetables, dessert bar, and drinks. The meal will be prepared and served by the members of the Win- slow Lions Club, with all pro- ceeds to help purchase new concrete picnic tables for the Todd Curtis shelter house and other community proj- ects sponsored by the Lions. Serving time is from 4-8 p.m. with a half pot drawing at 8. The Duck Race sign-up Duck Trophy. Are you ready for the sheets are out in several busi- nesses if you would like to pur- chase one or several ducks for the race. The Duck Race will be held Sept. 15 on the Pato- ka River and is sponsored by the Winslow Lions Club. One duck is $2 and 3 ducks are $5. Last duck receives the Ugly Light Up Winslow Parade on Sept. 15? If not, you only have a little over a month to get ready, and you all know that time passes by so fast when you think you have lots of time, so don't delay. Any- one can be in this parade, but remember to "Light Up," whether its a vehicle, bikes, horses, strollers, walkers, or whatever you come up with. Help us Light Up Winslow. The kiddies go back to school, so slow down and watch for busses stopped on road- ways. Keep an eye on family and friends and do what you can for them. Then, as I always say, smile, wave and say hi to everyone this week. Show some kindness. • Outstanding No Hassle Replacement™ limited warranty and 10 year parts limited warranty protection* • Outstanding No Hassle Replacement™ limited warranty and 10 year parts limited warranty protection* • Energy efficiencies as high as 18 SEER‡ • Energy efficiencies as high as 18 SEER‡ • Quiet operation • Quiet operation Quiet operation Totally Cool Call About Our Energy-Efficient Air Conditioners • Quiet operation IS YOUR BROKER LEAVING TOWN?
