Fall- en Adam could generate and beget only fallen, sin- ful offspring, whom even the law could not change. But "what the law could not do, in that it was weak [because of] the flesh, God, sending His own Son, in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin," accomplished, "that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spir- it" (Romans 8:3,4). As Adam was made in the likeness of God, but which Scripture calls "the flesh," is that which was generated by a fallen begetter. It is sinful in it- self, even in the believer. It cannot be improved or changed. But "that which is born [or begotten] of God" always pleases Him. It was begotten by the Spirit of God Himself. This is why our Lord said to Nicodemus: "That which is born our fallen Adamic nature true believers, through faith, have also become "partakers of the divine nature" (II Peter 1:4). This is the "inner man" of which Paul speaks in Ephesians 3:16, and this "inner man" delights to do God's will (Romans 7:22). Fol- lowing the rules is not sal- vation and won't give you a personal relationship with Christ. When we receive Christ as our personal Sav- ior we see these guidelines as love and protection. When some people think about Christian they think about a lot of rules. They can't go to wild parties. They can't sleep around. They can't swear or get drunk. They can't go to strip clubs or bars. Every parent, coach and teacher knows there are some important rules. God's loving rules are im- portant but they aren't the point, or are they at the top of the list in our relationship with God. No one is saved by good works but as we walk with Christ we strive more and more to please Him. The important things is about the new found relationship with Christ. Without a person- al relationship with Christ you might find the rules to be boring. He did not deserve to suffer for He was sinless. But God was glorified through His suffering, which was not really for Himself but for us, for our sin.
