The token Yankee of the cast is also the biggest name, but Sheen is more than happy to have been part of the relatively small pro- duction. "It's one of the great Ca- nadian classics, everybody knows it," the Ohio native told the To- ronto Sun. "I've read it to my chil- dren 50 years ago. We all know the story. And it never gets old, even though you know what's coming." Montgomery drew upon her own childhood growing up in bucolic P.E.I., basing many of the characters on people in her life. Since its 1908 publication, "Anne of Green Gables" has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into 20 languages. Along with screen adaptations, plays and musicals abound — the musical has en- joyed annual productions in Canada since its 1964 debut, af- ter which it made its way to the United States, Europe and be- yond. Many productions tend to put a heavy focus on Anne and Gilbert's relationship — one which begins in hatred after the latter calls the self-consciously redheaded Anne "carrots" (crime of the century!) on her first day of school. She de- lights us all by smashing her slate over his head and proceeds to ice him out for years to come, despite multiple apologies and genuine attempts to make amends. A par- ticular act of kindness years after the fact finally forces Anne to for- give him, and the two end up mar- ried with a pack of darling chil- dren. It's a great part of Anne's story, but not, some might argue, the most important. This new produc- tion, written by "Slings and Ar- rows" co-creator Susan Coyne, puts a particular focus on the rela- tionship between Anne and Maril- la, which, to some, is the real crux of the story and Anne's life. Just as Gilbert has to win over Anne, so does Anne have to win over her straight-laced and formidable mother figure — though, thankful- ly, it doesn't take nearly as long.
